About this deal

A raw and ragged book for a war that officially announced to the world that what's old is new in conflict: war fought between neighbors divided by religion or ethnicity, and fought hand to hand. I finished reading Anthony Loyd's account of his time in the Balkans and Chechnya only a few days ago and I am still feeling the after-effects . I have to say, in fact, that given the enormous subject he's tackling, the subject of the author'sown personality became far more compelling for me than the wars he wascovering. In the midst of the daily life-and-death struggle among Bosnia’s Serbs, Croats and Muslims, he was inspired by the extraordinary human fortitude he discovered.

Anthony Loyd is a British foreign correspondent who has reported from numerous conflict zones including the Balkans, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Iraq and Chechnya.Lloyd longed for the fury of war but felt he missed it as a British military commander during Desert Storm. There's bloodred-vivid descriptions of the fighting, sure, but there's also the dark poetic insight of a man who's seen humanity at its worst. On the autobiographical front, he attributes his immersion in war to his hostile relationship with his intimidating father, and to his family's complex web of national and ethnic origins (Austrian, English, Belgian, Egyptian, Jewish).

The fear and confusion of battle are so vivid that in places, they rise like acrid smoke from the page' New York Times | 'Loyd's strongest writing is in his descriptions of carnage - of the sound and smell of shellfire; of the sexual release of blasting away with an automatic machine gun . The BiH troops scrambled out of their bunkers among the trees, stumbling down the narrow trenches to take up their positions on the knoll of ground overlooking the Croat-held houses little more than a hundred yards below them. My War Gone By, I Miss It So is a story about Loyd’s struggle of emotional turmoil and his abuse of alcohol and heroin becoming the solution. It's an account of Anthony Lloyd's experience as a journalist in Bosnia and Chechnya interspersed with accounts of his heroin addiction and his riven family.I was struck by Anthony's work and words, experiences, and for me his is an important voice and an important book. I finished reading Anthony Loyd's account of his time in the Balkans and Chechnya only a few days ago and am still feeling the after-effects . Loyd’s strongest writing is in his descriptions of carnage—of the sound and smell of shellfire; of the sexual release of blasting away with an automatic machine gun . These scenes, and others, give a certain character to the war and its combatants that will not be found in any scholarly work.
