The author had lived in Singapore when the case happened but later moved to the Philippines and there got a whole different view of the story. A murder mystery is at the heart of the story but sometimes I lost sight of that because the characters are very well developed and had separate full lives outside of their common connection to the murder mystery.

However, I was expecting more of a mystery and not a commentary, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
