About this deal

I don't need long exposure stabilization for wildlife, but for other shooting hand held shooting it is great. My wife arrived to the cottage late in the evening and after some unceremonious unboxing, I ogled the lens, attached it to my E-M1 Mark III, pointed it through the trees at a sailboat that was moored near our island, and took my first shot.

Using the phase detection-equipped Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, I found the lens was perfectly capable of tracking focus on large, relatively predictably-moving subjects such as trains or planes, but struggled with smaller, more erratic wildlife. This really isn’t Micro Four Thirds’ comfort zone, with noise and noise reduction robbing images of detail. The combination of the high-resolution, high-performance lens line-up and powerful image stabilization capability results in sharp, high-quality photos and videos across a spectrum of scenarios, backdrops and conditions. Only on very rare occasions with some extremely harsh backlit subjects did I see a faint hint of CA. The Olympus range of micro four thirds cameras is designed around portability and this lens cements this, as well as Panasonic Lumix G compatibility, as a truly lightweight system. These bring extraordinary telephoto reach, equivalent to 1100mm and 1600mm at full telephoto, respectively.

This switch will lock the lens at its 100mm position, and while I didn't experience any "lens creep" while using the lens, it's a handy feature to have; as the lens ages, the zoom mechanism might loosen and the lens could extend outward on its own. The Deko platform is provided by Pay4Later Ltd, t/a Deko which acts as a credit broker, not a lender and does not charge you for credit broking services. In photography however, sometimes that planning has to happen very quickly otherwise you'll miss the shot. I am curious to find out how others use the lens, or if you are lucky to get good light to work with all the time. But when it comes to my day-to-day adventures on the hiking trail or the waterways I will now be packing the 100-400mm lens. Autofocus is speedy, especially if you pair it with a phase-detect focus camera like the Olympus E-M1 Mark III. Working in an open field with good early morning light, the backgrounds became a creamy blur while the feather details were outstanding.
