In 2018 Bloomsbury stopped selling the paperback covers with colours, and are now selling them with the same cover as the hardcover books.
Initially, I faced some challenges in following the intricate storylines and character developments in novels. I grew up in the prime Harry Potter years, eagerly waiting for the next book to be released so I could read it from start to finish with minimal breaks.This is a fantasy that takes place in Paris in 1889 where coercion, magic, betrayal, and murder are the norm. The journey starts when uptight headmaster Thomas Senlin loses his wife Marya at the foot of the Tower of Babel—on their honeymoon.
The magic in this school is definitely a little bit dark and steamy and for this reason, is perfect for a list of dark academia novels. Set in modern-day London with some magicians and mayhem thrown in, it’s perfect if you love the everyday magic of the Harry Potter universe.
Having read both series in childhood, His Dark Materials evoked a similar sense of awe in me as Harry Potter, and that’s what I remember now.

The story intertwines the lives of all those that read the book and the mystery and supernatural that follows them. But seriously, this novel is beautiful and features a strong women fighting against the powers of darkness! The books though similar in appearance never really even matched each other, the Azkaban book for example has a glossy cover where as the other 3 have matt!
Read The Name of the Wind for… a darker, more atmospheric take on all of the classic tropes of magical coming-of-age. Read The Lightning Thief for… a young adult bestseller that’s best known as a modern classic for teen boys, but is fantastic for all ages. The detailed storytelling in books can transport you into the world of the story in a way that movies or TV series often can’t quite match.
