About this deal

What Claire never expected after the job was over was to find herself in the middle of a murder investigation. The red is eye catching sure, but everything else just didn’t interest me and I was hoping for something similar to the other covers that Delaney’s book have and I actually would have preferred the original title The Decoy over Believe Me. In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation. Delaney, I did not read the original version of this book, but I would like to go on record saying that this recreation of your original idea is a true masterpiece. She has a background in foster homes and all that involves, or - probably more accurately - doesn't provide.

A British drama student, in New York without a green card, Claire takes the only job she can get: working for a firm of divorce lawyers, posing as an easy pick-up in hotel bars to entrap straying husbands. I liked that the setting of this book was constantly changing, that created more intrigue to me, as a reader. The prologue lets us know that there has been a gruesome murder in a hotel, and part one of the book jumps back five days to let us find out who’s the victim, who are the suspects and what was the reason… or at least what the police believes!

To make ends meet she works for a law firm luring unsuspecting husbands into making her a sexual proposition, once she gets them on tape she walks away and gets the evidence into the attorneys or wives' hands. She’s an actress but a student of the Constantin Stanislavski method which suggests you don’t ‘play’ a character.

Throughout the book, we follow this main character who I immensely disliked; she was so dramatic and over the top. I really enjoyed The Girl Before so eagerly awaited Delaney’s second novel, Believe Me, which the author (Tony Strong, writing as JP Delaney) notes is a re-work and re-publication of a manuscript published 17 years earlier. Beware reader, you may receive major whiplash from all the twists and turns, but it was precisely this aspect that kept the pages turning so quickly. It's the role of her career, one she throws herself into so wholeheartedly she loses track of what is real and what is masquerade, ending up madly in love with her target. There was probably a very good reason why the original release of this book seventeen years ago wasn’t met with huge critical acclaim and that’s simply because it’s not particularly impressive. His second thriller, BELIEVE ME, was also a Sunday Times bestseller, as were his subsequent books THE PERFECT WIFE, PLAYING NICE and MY DARLING DAUGHTER. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. I enjoyed the Author's other book "The girl Before" and was hoping to be blown away by this book as I was by that book. It is her hunt for this adoration that brought her to New York City to study at a prestigious — READ : expensive AF — acting school.
