In the longer-aged ports on our list we’re seeking character; those deeper notes of fig, nuts, and butterscotch. Senhora da Ribeira’s wines are some of the finest in the Douro and they complement those from Bomfim in the composition of Dow’s classic Vintage Ports. Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognizable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house.

The nose is just beginning to evolve into musky, dried plum and raisin aromas with whiffs of tree bark, nutmeg, cumin and cloves.The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long. A fine tipple to round off your Christmas celebrations splendidly, especially if served with ripe Stilton. His became the first and only Port company to transport its precious cargo of casks of fine Ports under its own armed protection across the treacherous Bay of Biscay, a strong dissuasion to attack during a period when less audacious companies saw their sales dwindle away. For sherry too, liquids range all the way from light and refreshing finos, through to the delicious, intensely sweet stickiness of a Pedro Ximénez (PX).

Pungent (in a good way) with a little must, apricot and candied fruit, it is wonderfully thick and decadent to sip. And what’s more, representing incredible value for money, you really don’t have to spend a fortune to get something of quality. Dow's is a family-owned Port house that has been producing traditional-style Port for more than 200 years, despite war, disease and economic turbulence. The palate is seriously big and voluptuous with medium to high acidity and a medium to firm level of fine tannins. For over two centuries the name of DOW has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley.Only available in limited quantitys, Dows Christmas Port is a selected blend of rich, vibrant Ports that have been carefully matured in Oak. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis).
