About this deal

In contrast to the branding from other lens-makers, Kodak emphasized that the name was a quality mark rather than referring to any particular optical formula. A larger objective diameter allows more light to enter the binoculars, resulting in brighter images, especially in low-light conditions. I have mixed Ektar and Portra 400 in a single project, and with scanning and appropriate colour correction (given the vagaries of colour in scanning. com are the exclusive property of the named author (except where stated otherwise) and are protected by copyright.

This film doesn’t do as well as Kodak Portra, or even Kodak’s consumer films Gold and UltraMax, when recovering details. It looks great at 400, 200, 100, 50 etc - I've been 5 stops over by mistake and the scans look fine. The red flags, green trees and yellow helmet on the third image are other examples of the high saturation. However, while I suppose it’s possible the guy has a nice tan from riding around in the sun all day, it probably wasn’t to the extent that shot makes it appear.I’ve tried to use three photographs below that demonstrate the claims Kodak explicitly makes of Ektar. As I wasn’t sure yet on the outcome of Ektar, I took a some Portra 400 with me as well, and concluded that it was a good opportunity to compare them both. I quit my corporate job in 2018 to pursue this passion full-time and have been lucky enough to work on projects all over the world with brands such as Visa, Airbnb, and prAna. However, with Kodak Ektar 100, the grain is barely noticeable throughout the entire image even in the out of focus areas and shadows where grain usually shows up the most. however sometimes you may want a cleaner look and Ektar is one of the best candidates when it comes to that.

As you can see, knowing the times of day and how to properly filter can make a big difference in the sky. The film characteristic curves table found on Kodak’s datasheet for Ektar shows a sharp decline in sensitivity around the shadow areas. I've found that it can turn ordinary scenes into something special, and special scenes into something surreal. Whether Kodak Ektar is a good option for your street photography or not depends completely on whether its pros and cons match the look you want and the environment you’re shooting in, in my opinion. At ISO 100 speed, you’re pretty limited on shooting in different lighting conditions and will have to stick to bright sunny days unless you’re using a tripod. So while I’m not positive that it’s my favorite film, there’s one thing that I can say – I find myself shooting Kodak Ektar 100 most frequently.

This means that this film should be able to handle overexposure really well — a fantastic advantage over slide film. For this Kodak Ektar 100 review, I loaded up my trusty Nikon F3 and took a road trip to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn, Oregon. Content contributor – become a part of the world’s biggest film and alternative photography community blog. I will still use the different Portra's from time to time as conditions dictate, but Ektar is my go to film for the foreseeable future. With so many different films still available and each with their own characteristics, I think understanding where a film doesn’t shine is as important as talking about where it does.

Shadow recovery is also less impressive than films like Portra 160, so be aware of this when shooting. If you’re lucky enough to travel somewhere with enough sun for the ISO 100 rating and lots of colourful scenes to shoot, I could image Ektar being the perfect film for your trip. At Ag we have a very tightly controlled C41 processing line that will deliver superb results from Kodak Ektar. I’ve been shooting Ektar on and off for the past five years while living in Thailand and Canada with a few different cameras. Yet some of those Ektar 100 pictures (like the one above) I always kept coming back to, despite all the issues, because they simply looked very appealing to me.

About scanning, why do you keep all this dirt on your photos, it’s not part of the photo itself (I can imagine that you don’t put deliberately dirt on your lens…) but comes mainly from the scanning process. While certain printing processes and scanning software may be able to diminish this effect, it could get tricky to get rid of when it does show. I could tell the colors were going to be something I was not used to, but to be honest, I was ready for something brand new. Kodak Ektar is a film very much suited to landscape or travel photography or whenever fine grain and heavier colour saturation is demanded. A lot of experience and mistakes and corrections to really know how to get the most out of an emulsion.
