About this deal

In the 60s, she was accused of racism for books not mentioned here, as well as of sexism and xenophobia (it’s true that foreign people are seen as suspicious in a few stories. It is suggested that this seven year old girl is not alone in not understanding the concept of custom duties because I suspect that 90% of the population does not understand custom duties, and the 10% who do are probably benefiting financially from them. The Five become convinced that the Sticks are involved in smuggling and set about trying to capture them. She wrote over 700 books and 2,000 short stories, including favourites such as The Famous Five, The Secret Seven , The Magic Faraway Tree and Malory Towers.

Well it does and these play their roles in the uncovering and subsequent foiling of a kidnap involving the child of very wealthy parents. These days one simply cannot hire anybody off the street to look after children, and if one does so without performing the proper checks, then one could also get oneself in trouble. Of course things work out well for our heroes, they get to the bottom of the Sticks’ secret, naturally and all on a full stomach! I remain convinced Enid Blyton secretly wanted to be a food critic, as food was as much a character as anyone. There was one interesting review I read of this book, and that was when a seven year old girl asked her father about a custom duty.

Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. This is one of Blyton’s humorous books just like “Mystery of the Missing Man” and “The Circus of Adventure” (the Gus scenes before his abduction). Her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into more languages more often than any other children's author.

Anne had opened a tin of salmon, two tins of peaches, a tin of milk, cut some bread and butter, and made a big jug of cocoa. I didn't see it coming (apparently Sunshine Seaspray did but she's a bit of a smarty pants when it comes to that sort of thing). In a way this is very much Julian’s book, which is probably why it was my favourite when I was younger, because it feels very Juliancentric. Blyton knew how to build mystery and intrigue, and still managed to surprise me with a twist, albeit a sinister one. Anyway, the plucky five are abandoned by two sets of parents into the hands of the substitute cook, Mrs Stick, and her husband. The children discover the Sticks have imprisoned a young girl, Jennifer Armstrong, on the island and are holding her for ransom. When the food is all loaded into George’s boat, and they’ve successfully tricked the Sticks into thinking they’ve gone to Julian’s parents’ home, the Five row over to the island and have a fun time for a couple of days before the Sticks show up again.
