About this deal

Not enough and moisture won’t be able to escape, leading to problems associated with condensation build up. Despite featuring extractor fans in kitchens and particularly bathrooms which create the most moisture that disposes of some of this moisture outside, inevitably some will get through the ceiling or rise through the loft hatch if it does not have a good seal and get into the loft. This is usually due to missing insulation under the roof tiles which causes cold spots where condensation forms. Every winter, people go into their lofts to put away items they won’t need until next year or to take out the Christmas decorations. These small gaps will allow water vapour to get up into your freshly insulated loft area, where it can come into contact with lots of cold surfaces.

This is often the result of high humidity levels in the home; some of this moisture will make its way into the loft.I confirm I have read and understood the terms and conditions and privacy policy and I agree to the terms. Having too many vents in your roof can increase the chances of water leaking into your loft space and causing damage. If you are fit enough to get into your loft and you have a traditional home (with insulation on the floor of the loft), you can solve the condensation problem yourself. In the meantime, we used a dehumidifier for hours at a time which removed gallons of moisture from the air but still couldn't keep on top of the condensation. The roof or loft vents require a breeze to pull the moisture out of the loft, so, on calm days, you may experience more condensation.

You might be wondering why we didn't know this was happening, but to put things in context, we can't use our loft for anything sensible, like storage, as it's not boarded, so rarely open the hatch. It would be perfect for Sylvanian Families or 'Borrowers' (showing my age with those two references. Modern types of vapour barriers allow some moisture through but not so much that condensation will be a problem in the loft. For more information, please see our blog on the changes to BS 5534:2014 or see BS 5250 Code of Practice for Control of Condensation in Buildings. However, when the loft is cold (from late autumn into winter and spring), the underside of the roofing felt and the timbers will be cold.
