perhaps make it easier to push in because you don't push an almighty plug of air up yourself with the plug, the groves prevent a seal and let the air out. As I said in my review for the smaller version of this plug, if you aren't addicted to anal stimulation before you try using one, you definitely will be soon afterwards.
