About this deal

While the core game loop is deeply satisfying you still need to know what all the different knowledge and building tiles do before you make your choices. Buildings are plentiful and help you economize actions, but otherwise worthless unless used to complete a region. Despite the randomness of dice, there’s enough options that allow you to take control and make meaningful decisions. I’ve played a few other Feld games since but none of them have been so precise, pleasant, and accessible as this one.

If you have selected a tile in your storage to place it in your estate / duchy, you can also unselect it, or directly select another tile. I particularly had a problem with the hex tiles being extremely small and very difficult to see and understand.

From academic progress and city development, to agriculture and trading, many roads to prosperity are open to you. Unless some other opportunity presents itself to me, my main strategy regarding knowledge tiles is to complete all of them, and to have 4 at an absolute minimum give me victory points. It’s best to think of the dice in Castles of Burgundy not as enablers of actions but a way of disabling certain courses of action. Small sized farms can be a tidy source of points when there’s nothing better to do, but they’re merely an opportunistic play based on the dice and your board state. The beige tiles are buildings, each of which will give you instant bonuses that will be vital in ensuring you’re in a position to take advantage of every die you roll.

They include days out, places of interest, nostalgia, cottages, gardens, fantasy, wildlife, comedy, perplexing, crazy cats, What If?Unless I am going to try to complete a large farm (more about that in the next point), my nearly exclusive focus in the first two/three rounds is to try to complete regions. That is, a game where there are lots of ways to get points, and all of them feel like they are viable for winning strategies. But they can be disadvantaged if they choose a poor space for their starting castle, so beginner setups are still better choices for beginners (they don't have to choose a starting castle space), even if other options are not strongly discouraged. Games we currently love: Targi, Star Wars Deck Building, Lost Cities, 7 Wonders: Duel, Patchwork, Wingspan, Azul (original, Summer Pavilion, and Sintra), Everdell. Therefore, to break even in this metric, they need to be put into use roughly 4 times (2 dice spent on workers is 4 workers).
