This satisfying new collection, published as the crossword celebrates its 80th anniversary, gathers together 100 of the best puzzles in the series. Guardian daily puzzles are quite heterogeneous in both style and difficulty, because there are many different setters.

If this is the way the Everyman puzzle is going to be from now on, I won’t be wasting any more time on it.If I saw any one of those clues in a daily puzzle in the Guardian, I might raise an eyebrow, but I wouldn’t think there was anything seriously wrong. This is an extremely popular crossword puzzle in which for sure you will pass some great time and also keep your brain sharp with all the interesting crossword clues found on each day on The Guardian Everyman Crossword puzzles. I found this difficult – it took me more than double what I normally reckon to take on a more challenging Everyman and twice my time for Boatman’s prize, which I completed straight after! In case you’re wondering the reason it gives Cardiff as my address is that (a) I still have a house there and (b) I’ve had some problems with things being delivered to Ireland from the UK and (c) I recently found a stash of sticky address labels with the Cardiff address on which saves the hassle of writing my address out on each entry.

I resumed in 2017 but have found it difficult to get back into the swing of writing clues (at which I’ve never really been very good anyway).I did find quite a few clues that were a bit loose with the “rules” of cryptic clues as I understand them: either the definition wasn’t quite accurate, or the cryptic grammar wasn’t quite right. e. TRACK with the end missing and with number meaning a track on a record); `of gripes’ defines TORMINAL; the rest is MINATORY (threatening) with TORY replaced by L for Liberal. It seems like this must be one of those things that shows up repeatedly in cryptics, but if so I’ve never seen it (or, just as likely, have seen it and forgotten). The phrase is used in legalese to mean 'the reasonable person', and has gone into the language to mean 'the man in the street', a modern Everyman.
