The result is a rich, aromatic and fruity liqueur that is equally satisfying neat, mixed or in a classic cocktail. Anyway, I then tried it with hot water, honey, orange juice and a few other things in various combinations and amounts, and the results were often very good. As an entity it was still going in 1983, when Philip Morris recorded its address in his Schweppes Guide to Scotch as 13 Maritime Street in Leith. This liqueur combines 5-year-old Scotch whisky with a variety of botanicals that include ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla.

The cloves are strong enough to come through, likewise the nutmeg -the rest are to my palate (note caveat) mostly overpowered by the rather cloying presentation, which carries into a lengthy, coating finish. On the palate the flavour starts with candied ginger, orange peel, allspice, maple syrup and a whisper of star anise.

The spice sits in the middle, a slowly dissolving aniseed ball, with cinder toffee and charred hints joined by bitter lemon rind and sweet candied lemon. It has aromas of cinnamon-and-golden syrup biscuits, lemon, cloves, vanilla pods, honey, nutmeg and eucalyptus on the nose.
