About this deal

A whisky only Jura could make, born on the island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from its home. Founded only in 1989, Bodegas Terras Gauda has quickly established itself as the producer of definitive Albariño, one of today's most fashionable white wines and an Eton Vintners bestseller.

To arrest germination, the malted barley is dried in a kiln, identifiable by the distinct pagoda-shaped chimneys, characteristic of every distillery. The “middle cut” is collected by the stillman, only when he is personally satisfied that it has reached a high enough standard. For this most important of tasks, his equipment is simple – a tulip shaped glass, which will best capture the aroma of the whisky, and fresh water, which he adds to the whisky for nosing. Now, there are two kinds of whisky: malt whisky, used essentially in the creation of blended whiskies, or bottled in small proportions as a single malt; and grain whisky, which is combined with malt whisky to create the famous blends. This is an experience many American distilleries are trying to create, but do not succeed in the process.

The art of blending is to produce a blended Scotch whisky, which is different from others, a little more subtle, a little more complex than the individual whiskies which have gone into the blend. This process creates a Whisky which has notes of Malty Spice which is infused with Sweet notes of Vanilla. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.A smoky and unpeated whisky that is matured in bourbon casks and finished in sherry, this single malt is well-balanced and presents fruity, dark chocolate notes. Bottled at 40% ABV, which results in an incredibly smooth drinking experience that offers an accessible, rewarding and engaging dram. This is now my 3rd bottle of Jura 10 in as little as 5 weeks, that in it's self should tell you it's good, but if not allow me to explain why I like it so much.

It’s like when you have a nice dry rub on ribs, a little sugary almost like brown sugar but then a little bit of spice. Peat, a natural fuel cut from the moors of Scotland, is used to fire kilns in the drying process, along with more modern fuels. The following day I kept on remembering the taste and just couldn't wait to pour a wee dram, sit back and relive the concofenee of sense stimulating events. This has a light golden colour with a nose that is clean and fresh with a hint of sea salt almonds and spice notes are also present. The still-man exercises much more control in the second distillation as only the heart, or “middle cut”, of the spirit flow will be collected as new spirit. Some casks will previously have been used to mature oloroso, fino or amontillado sherries; some will have contained bourbon and some will be oak. A whisky only Jura could make, born of Island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from home. Jura distillery is a seeming cat of a distillery, founded in 1810 and possessed of nine lives, or at least a timeline of eight owners. In 2018, the complete core line of Jura was retired as the distillery decided to move in a new flavor direction.

Crafted in exceptionally tall stills, matured for 10 years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and fresh sea air with a further enhancement from the finest aged Oloroso Sherry casks from Jerez, Spain.
