About this deal

When I speak of justice and anger written with luminous genius, I will forever be speaking of Yomi Sode's Manorism , a glorious, furious collection that tells a thousand stories in stunningly crafted verse.

Yomi Sode's debut articulates the most subtle nuances of Black British Masculinity with a breathtaking vulnerability. Caravaggio – originally, unexpectedly – looms large: as a man who moved between spheres of exalted patronage and petty criminality; as a painter who, amid the elegant conventions of late Mannerism, forged his own style of visceral dark and light; and as an individual whose recognized genius was allowed to legitimate and excuse his violence. Why does the fear that the white man harbour in his heart, lead to the death or oppression of the Black man? I noted to my friend whilst I was struggling to read this collection, “I think I need him (Yomi) to read it to me”. Why have black men decided to internalise and exhibit the fragility born of ignorance and privileged that the white man has without realising that because of their Blackness they are not perceived the same?Yomi Sode's Manorism has both its feet planted firmly on the ground - but as a collection, it spends much of its existence split between various opposing worlds of imagination: Black and white, past and present, peaceful and chaotic . The poems turn from an observational, plainly descriptive register to a more poetic perspective effortlessly. Sone honed his skills through open mic performances and you can hear their echoes through reading his lines, but they would deliver more of a blow if they were spoken. the poetry really conveys meaningful and personal experiences and explores themes of racism and black history really well. I was sent this out of the blue by some lovely marketer at Penguin Books and thank you whoever that marketer was as I loved this collection of poetry/works by Yomi Ṣodi.

Snippets of Yoruba interweave with English, and a moving final sequence, part poetry, part play, charts the dramatic reconciliations surrounding a death in the family. ode takes us on a visceral journey, spilling secrets nakedly, not allowing us to look away from the hard truth. As it stands, many of the poems in this collection reference Caravaggio and his paintings, exploring the fact that people still comment on the artists greatness and importance in the history of the Baroque movement, failing to acknowledge the horrifying truth. Yomi Ṣode’s debut collection Manorism explores family, survival, generational trauma and the complexities of belonging – it is an examination of the lives of Black British men and boys. this is beautifully written but I couldn’t give it five stars because to me this needs to be spoken to you rather than just read by yourself. A work of formal experimentation, where lyric essays nestle against play-let structures, in service of a Claudia Rankine-esque determination to bear witness and find frameworks with which we can look at the world properly, fully . I agree with another reviewer, who mentioned that Sode's poetry perhaps works more effectively as oral performance.

For lovers of poetry, I think this collection will speak volumes to you, and for those of you, much like myself who are not the keenest of poetry readers/lovers, maybe give it a try and let me know your thoughts. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. What I did not like was how I Jumped on the net galley app and on google because I had to translate some words. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). It is an honour to know my work will be joining the likes of Terrance Hayes, Caleb Femi and Claudia Rankine. Yomi asks and, in a sense, answers in this collection, why it is easy for a white man to escape his wrongdoing, while a Black man is not given the same opportunity.
