About this deal

It's smaller, closer to minifig scale, more colourful, stability has been improved, and the roof does not look so haphazard and fragile. They should have thought more of how this would look in a display with Black Falcon sets or just gone all the way and done what was proposed in Ideas as that had a lot more character to it, imho. And 6040 probably worked exclusively for the local military, while 6918 appears to have been forced out of business.

Even though this is an 18+ set, this stage could easily be marked ages 8+ and packaged in a small box within the larger box. I also can’t excuse the vertical support on the third floor which doesn’t match the geometry of the rest of the building. In the case of this set, my expectations started low, but grew a lot after building the ground floor and tree, followed by a slow decrease in enthusiasm in the bags which followed. The set designer fixed those issues and even added some curved timbers to reinforce the vertical wall posts! Our rooftop to the building also uses a quite parts-intensive overlapping technique, but LEGO dabbles in a few little details here and there to break the mould, such as actual mould and wooden slats to imply a damaged roof. These throwback sets to the days when I was a kid are truly special and hold a real place in my heart as a builder and Lego fan. Thankfully, the characters that are in the box are all incredibly well-designed: the blacksmith’s double-sided head communicates so much through just his eyes and brows, the rest being covered by his big, bushy beard; the archer’s squint has her ready to loose arrows into the apple tree’s target; and Classic Castle fans will find a lot to love where the knights are concerned, because they’re bringing the ‘80s back in style. I’m also interested to see how much this set builds on the classic LEGO Castle style with the detailing and minifigures. I am very impressed with this attention to detail, since blacksmiths would often use different shapes of raw material for creating different products!

If there is a criticism, and a very minor one, is it could have done with 1 or 2 more mini figures- but I have added these. BrickEconomy, the BrickEconomy logo and all content not covered by The LEGO Group's copyright is, unless otherwise stated, ©2024 BrickEconomy. As an 18+ set, I don’t think most adults like the play feature of being able to turn the light on and off.

Part of the reason the actual Castle theme hasn't really drawn me in is that ever since my childhood, I've been unimpressed with how much more emphasis they have on siege warfare and military conflicts than on the everyday lifestyles of medieval people. The fifth bag is all about the tree, which begins by building a gnarled tree using a variety of SNOT techniques. The wall is adorned in the Praetorian Guard shoulder amour from Star Wars in silver, and the heavy load door is brick-built with printed wood detailing. And I'd personally feel pretty disappointed with a set that skimped on things like interior details just to make the set as a whole take up more space. At the same time, Billund’s brightest minds can often go further than fans, introducing elements in new colours, or dreaming up designs beyond our wildest imaginations.
