About this deal

I love the rhythm of this liturgy, the way the prayers work deep into your heart and mind (as you use them more and more), going with you throughout your day, and bringing you back again.

The Northumbria Community is well-respected across the Christian Church for its solid base and adventurous exploration of Celtic themes in personal prayer and corporate worship. They are born out of our Community’s story, have been lived and prayed throughout our journey, and enshrine our ethos. Its spirituality and the rhythm of its Celtic Daily Prayer have been a significant influence on many European Baptists, particularly through the Community’s annual visits at the International Baptist Theological Seminary (IBTS) when it was based in Prague, and subsequently in the devotional life of the IBTS Centre in Amsterdam. Both volumes of Celtic Daily Prayer are a complex mixture of writing original to Northumbria Community, along with some third party and out-of-copyright material, and so we thought it would help to offer some guidelines to simplify the process of seeking permission to use the material they contain.

Celtic Daily Prayer is also available as an INTERACTIVE E-BOOK published by HarperCollins and available for a variety of devices. The main part of the book consists of thoughts, prayers and readings for the morning and the evening of every day of the year, as well as liturgies for both normal and special occasions. Some find that the mornings tend to be too rushed for lengthy silences and that this can best wait till evening prayer. The Daily Office – Morning, Midday and Evening Prayer – is at the core of the life of the Northumbria Community.

Topics include reaching adulthood/mid-life/old-age; renewal of a marriage; the summer solstice; living with pain; blessing a garden; Christmas preparation; after an argument; scattering ashes; studying; peace; the 'father wound'; loyalty and sleep, among many, many others. My only complaint is -- and it's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 -- that the paperback is soon losing its morning-prayer pages since I refer to them everyday, so I wonder if the hardback wouldn't be a better choice. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
