I always want to be able to take a quiet early evening pint or two with a friend or share a bottle of wine over dinner somewhere. I rarely vomit from alcohol consumption (and last time I did, I’m sure there was something wrong with the coffee beans in the espresso martinis, it wasn’t the volume of booze! I've raced off to games hours early to give me a chance to drink a lot of beer in a relatively short time. And for full disclosure, Club Soda founder Laura has also written two pages to the book on her thoughts on alcohol-free cocktails. Books telling us to give up drinking are 10 a penny, but how about something for those of us who like a social drink but are occasionally worried that two turn into four rather too easily?It wasn’t so much the social interactions I struggled with; the laughing and chatting were no problem. And then I’d get into another conversation, which I’d bring to an end by saying I needed to go to the toilet. but as he was born with a facial abnormality he has been homeschooled by his parents his whole life. Reading Chiles' book mad me realise that my drinking story was remarkably similar to his own, and I guess many readers will feel the same. Whether this is a good or bad thing is beside the point; the reality is that this is what my life looks like, and this is what I must work with.

Again, I would stress it’s a personal opinion but if you are looking for inspiration to stop drinking I don’t think it’s this book. I can always recite the quadratic equation formula to prove I’m sober (this was my party trick during sixth form and uni – I did a maths degree, so can be excused for being a total geek! I can freely admit that both of us drink far more than the recommended limits – and definitely when on holiday would be up at a level similar to Adrian’s historic levels. In five or ten years, the way I was going, it was clear to me that I’d have had to stop drinking completely or face some pretty dire consequences with my innards.

Perhaps he’s cut down from his past consumption but I’m not convinced the halo polishing kit needs to come out of the cupboard just yet.

I always assumed that my friendship group, which was 98% made up of drinkers, merely reflected society, but that’s nonsense.thinking that on a day on holiday with wine starting at lunchtime, pushing through the afternoon with a beer in the sunshine, cocktails before dinner, and yet more wine with dinner – it probably wasn’t dissimilar units wise. Always consult a suitably qualified medical professional in a timely manner before undertaking any medical-related decisions. So, it’s greatly to our advantage if we can find a way of making the stuff work for us, rather than the other way around.
