About this deal

Prepare to embark on a strange journey that allows skeptical inquiry, or perhaps the possibility of believing in the afterlife! Even after I’d finished reading I found myself flicking through the pages and just appreciating the quality of the book and its illustrations. A quickfire tour through the history of ghosts throughout history and different cultures, myths and legend, right through to modern 19th-21st century experiences and their use in pop culture. From haunted ranches to epic maritime legends of the 19th century, devour stories of our world’s oldest hauntings and unexplainable phenomena in hair-raising accounts of the afterlife. It looks beautiful as a ‘coffee table book’, the illustrations and fun and it’s definitely something for paranormal enthusiasts. Although it gives serviceable descriptions of the content, it really just wets your lips before jumping to the next cool thing.

I’m also unsure who the intended audience is - the illustrations and the simple writing style would suggest a younger audience but some of the content would probably be over their heads. I understand it's a short book, but some of the things mentioned are glossed over to the point it really wasn't worth including them. There is also a unique guide on the different types of ghost and yes there is more than one type of ghost which was news to me. The illustrations are beautiful, very soft and inviting, allowing you to concentrate on the facts whilst providing good context for the information. The illustrations are cute and I really enjoyed the book - my one criticism would be that it was a whistlestop tour and of the paranormal, so wouldn’t be suitable for anyone wanting in-depth information!

It's the first time I've seen explanations from different cultures and belief systems in such depth, usually you only hear of the traditional western (often religious) and maybe some Japanese myths and traditions, both make up the majority of horror media we see today.

I thought this was quite interesting as I was expecting the opposite, I thought there'd be at least a little suspense or a feeling of fright. My favourite thing about this book is that whilst it is marketed as adult fiction and was perfectly suitable for 20 year old me, my 17 year old brother (who normally has an aversion to reading) sat down with it for 45 minutes flickering through and having conversations with me about how certain elements matched his computer games or things he’d seen on tv and we really enjoyed flipping through the book together because of this vibrant, sectioned format. A bump in the night, the crack of floorboards and the uneasy coldness of a room… signs we might attribute to a ghostly presence. Whether ghosts are the souls of the dead, windows in time or interdimensional beings, cultures through the ages have responded with fear and fascination to their horrific haunts and eerie appearances. It's weird that it doesn't work properly on the kindle app as I can read graphic novels on there no problem but this just didn't work at all. This book has been put together in a fantastic way and the text complements the illustrations perfectly.
