Day 15 of the 2023 Marvel Advent Calendar is a bit of a random one – I’m guessing that this is some sort of Arc Reactor on a steel pedestal, but the use of the trans-blue round brick is throwing me off as the shape is a little weird and could be anything. Bit of a weird one – not the worst day but I do wish it was slightly more clear what this is meant to be. I did notice it was the only advent calendar besides Friends that was sold out before Christmas and that you can still purchase.It seems that every year is hit or miss as far which advent theme will be great and which will fall short. On Day 16 of the 2023 Marvel Avengers Advent Calendar we get quite an interesting build – a throne for Loki! There are 7 minifigures – Okoye, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Spider-Man, Wong, Iron Man and Black Widow – plus mini builds and accessories that kids will recognise from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a mini Quinjet and the Hydra Train. This version of Okoye is slightly uncommon, as it’s only appeared once in 76214 Black Panther: War on the Water, so if you didn’t pick up that set, you’re in luck as this is a fairly affordable way to add this Okoye variant to your collection.

Day 5 of the Marvel gives us an Iron Man Snowman, complete with a fancy top hat, a trans-blue arc reactor in its chest, and two white blasters for arms.Thought I'd try something different this year and purchased the Avengers calendar, and it was really disappointing.

On Day 14, we get a mixed bag of things – an Ice Hockey stick, puck, and transparent goal, as well as a stuffed bunny and an Iron Man-coloured present. Melding LEGO and Technic in the most ingenious ways, the build is especially challenging but rewarding, especially when you see the functions in action! The minifigs included were really neat, there were a few minor characters that honestly should have been replaced by villains. That said, 7 big-name characters are pretty good, and sorta make up for the lackluster days and builds.

It’s a shame that he doesn’t have a festive Christmas jumper like Black Widow or Spider-man, but this is just plain old Steve Rogers. This build was a lot of fun and I especially love the use of colour here, with pops of pearl gold and a trans-red rockpit. She’s a key supporting character in the Black Panther movies, and Okoye has an important position as General of the Dora Milaje, the elite military unit that protects the Black Panther in Wakanda. It really feels like LEGO phoned this one in with no quality control, particularly when you compare it to the Star Wars calendar released the same year, which is full of cute little builds that pay homage to the different vehicles and scenes from the films.
