There you can earn a fortune, raise your salary and earn lots of fame points, but there are severe risks – you can lose all your money and fame. S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. Please keep in mind that the official Careers rules and instructions could be different depending on the game version you have. The Payday square is pretty self explanatory, with players collecting their annual salary as they pass, or if they are lucky enough to land on the square they get double their salary. The careers featured in various editions of the game have changed several times over the past 50 years.

In 1990 "Careers for Girls" included the jobs "School Teacher", "Fashion Designer" and "Super Mom", while the game's strategy was greatly simplified, as in the 1972 re-release. The yellow opportunity cards are used to move to the entrance squares of the various careers on the board. Leading off the main track are eight “career” paths which players can choose to follow if they land on the relevant start square, or may be forced to follow if they have received an instruction to do so from a card or other square on the board. The latest version was published by Winning Moves, yet I’ve also managed to get my hands on a copy that Jumbo produced in 1998. Phil Orbanes, in The Game Makers, his book on the History of Parker Brothers, explained the success of Careers “was due to the Space Race.

True to Parker Brothers, things get a bit more complex with other game elements, including special game board spaces and unique situations presented by Experience and Opportunity cards, that alter gameplay. The Experience cards allow you to move a certain number of spaces – 1 through 4 – instead of rolling the dice.It is 100% original and complete, and the game components (cards, money, playing pieces) look virtually unused.

All paths have some prerequisite for entry, and benefits accrue from going through any of the paths more than once. Players choose certain life paths in the game, and accrue points toward a winning goal along the way. We have enjoyed our morning Hnefatafl and coffees, as we turn our minds to the Viking mode of simulated war. Inside the occupation path, the players may accumulate or lose some of their fame, happiness, and fortune until reaching their respective goals.

No doubt people will have come up with their own house rules for the Engineering degree, and it would be interesting to learn what they’ve come up with! So players don’t know what their opposition is working towards, or how close anyone may be to winning the game.Careers is a board game first manufactured by Parker Brothers in 1955, which has been reprinted from time to time up to the present day. There is a track for college where one receives a degree, which causes one's annual salary grow upon completing each full round of the board, and affects other aspects of the game as listed in the cards and on the board squares.
