Each player begins with a backpack card listing items with which their hero begins that can serve as inspiration for how the hero responds to events during the game. The oldest player starts with the deck holder and acts as the dungeon master (DM) for the first turn. Play then moves on to the next space on the map, until the party reaches a gatekeeper space at the end of the map.It’s a credit limit that’s sits alongside your PayPal account which you can use for your online purchases. I loved how it makes them use their imagination and come up with escape plans on how much o dodge attacks or weather or not to help a monster. The game continues until you reach and defeat the final boss monster or all of the characters die along the way. The Dwarven Fighter and Dragonborn Rogue have decided to seek after monsters while the other two heroes play it safer by staying on the core spaces.

If a player chooses not to take part in a side quest they default as the DM for that encounter so as to keep them inovoled. The adventure deck is then removed from the deck holder and the deck for the next dungeon board is shuffled and placed in the deck holder.The DM lowers the damage clip on the monster card a number of health spaces equal to the damage inflicted. The final type of encounter has every player react to the situation their own way, again through improv storytelling, with each player then rolling a d20 to see what happens to their character.

While all of this variety sounds amazing, the thing we noticed after a couple of plays is that all of these options don’t really make much of a difference at all, at least on a mechanical level. Unfortunately the game does suffer potential feelings of repetition in its mechanics but that can be minimised by enthusiastic DMs and imaginative play.

In many role-playing games, it can take some time creating a character and getting organized before anyone even takes one step into a dungeon, let alone smells the sulfurous heat of a dragon. Even if you don’t go any further into the series, Dungeons and Dragons: Adventure Begins is a fun game on its own.

They draw the first card from the adventure deck and place it in the stand of the deck holder with the text facing the DM. Think choose-your-own-adventure books, but on a board game with actions decided by 20-sided dice and you wouldn’t be far off. While one of my older sons enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends, my two younger children have never experienced it but have shown some interest. Each monster has its own short table for this including a variety of different attack types, most of which cause damage to your character.
