As I'm going to Burma in October I bought this to get a feeling for the country and Aung San Suu Kyi and I was not disappointed. With the unwavering support of her husband, Oxford academic Michael Aris (David Thewlis), Suu Kyi sacrifices the peace and security of family life in England to lead the struggle to bring democracy to her native country, and put an end to the violence, corruption and human rights abuses that have come to characterise Burmese politics. It's certainly a very different version from the earlier film, much more stylised and rather scary but very well done.She is befriended by Tramp (Larry Roberts), a down-at-heel but charming mutt who decides to show her how he lives in his part of town. Viewers are given plenty of opportunity to argue over what the allegory actually means – how a sense of freedom can be tempered by circumstances or how people can be forced to come to terms with a strange and unexpected environment, almost against their will.
