Though he continued to perform right up until his death in 2009, Woodward was forever associated with "The Equalizer," a show he once considered silly, but nonetheless brought him considerable acclaim.

With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. His ability as tenor let him record twelve albums of romantic songs, as well as three albums of poetry and fourteen books to tape. This series, too obviously designed for a transatlantic audience, with an embittered ex-CIA man as the hero, made his face equally familiar on both sides of the pond, without bringing him parts to which he could have brought more depth. Throughout his career, he appeared in productions in both the West End of London and on Broadway in New York City. He has been exhibiting as an artist since 2006, with solo shows in London, Portland and Los Angeles and in group shows in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Asbury Park and beyond.

A brilliant performance in the film The Wicker Man (1973) and in a few others led to international stardom as court-martialed Lt. His work in the medium included The Bass Player and the Blonde (1978); Winston Churchill – The Wilderness Years (1981), in which he was Sir Samuel Hoare; and the Cold War thriller Codename: Kyril (1988). Earlier this year, despite suffering from ill health, he starred as the Rev Frederick Densham in A Congregation of Ghosts. After making his first professional appearance at the Castle Theatre, Farnham, in 1946, he attracted a loyal following of admirers during his years with the Croydon Repertory Company.

Following wide experience touring throughout England and Scotland, and a tour of India and Ceylon in Shakespeare and Shaw, Woodward arrived in London in 1955 with Where There's a Will at the Garrick. After leaving school at the age of 15, Woodward wanted to train as a journalist, but took work in a sanitary engineer's office and then at the age of 16 entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).Later feature films included a top-billed role in the horror film The Appointment (1982); a top brass role in the action thriller The Final Option (1982); a featured role in the horse-racing biopic Champions (1984); as King Saul in the biblical story King David (1985); another Bruce Beresford directed film with Mister Johnson (1990); the ghost of a murderer in the black comedy Deadly Advice (1994); the 18th century patriarch of The House of Angelo (1997), which he produced and also featured his three children; a lord in the action adventure The Abduction Club (2002); a featured part in the comedy action Hot Fuzz (2007) and, his last, a reverend in the drama A Congregation of Ghosts (2009). On the big screen he also played Sergeant Neil Howie, alongside Christopher Lee and Diane Cilento, in The Wicker Man (1973); Commander Powell in Who Dares Wins (1982); Saul in King David; the Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol; Merlin in Merlin and the Sword; Captain Haldane in The Young Winston; the racehorse trainer Josh Gifford in Champions; and Sergeant Wellbeloved in Stand Up Virgin Soldiers. The actor continued grandly on stage in such Shakespearean productions as "Hamlet" (Laertes)," "Romeo and Juliet" (Mercutio), "Pericles" (Thaliard), "Much Ado About Nothing" (Claudio), and "Measure for Measure" (Lucio), but scored a major success portraying Percy in "Rattle of a Simple Man" in 1961, making his Broadway debut in the play two years later.
