About this deal

The strongest scenes in the book were towards the middle where you know those loyal Space Marines who so eagerly want to get to the battle to fight. And here we sit, on a ship held together by rust and hope, with intent to dive into that ocean of madness. There's a lot of action packed into a relatively short book, and the constantly moving pace is keeping me turning the pages and hopping from book to book without slowing down. The Eisenstein becomes stranded in the Warp until it is rescued by Rogal Dorn and the Imperial Fists. We also learn more about the Imperial Fists in Book 4, but I still really want to meet more of the Legions, which will be encountered in later novels.

Following the battle the Legion travel to the Isstvan system, ostensibly to crush a rebellion by the people of Isstvan III. It works almost as well as a standalone as it does in the series and I would rate it as high as Fulgrim or Legion as the best of the series. The blurb tells you straight up, Garro and his loyals are heading for Terra to bring news of the betrayal to the Emperor himself. For Warhammer 40,000, he is best known for his four Blood Angels novels, the audio drama Heart of Rage, and his two Sisters of Battle novels.Garro maintained an even smile, but in truth he could detect the weariness, the pain in his old friend’s forced jocularity. DARK HORIZON, his new stand-alone thriller, is out now from Welbeck; OUTLAW, the 6th Marc Dane novel, is published by Bonnier, and the 4th book in the series - SHADOW - is available in the USA from Forge. The Flight of the Eisenstein is a novel by James Swallow and the fourth book in The Horus Heresy series.

If you haven't read the first three books, or if you're not a fan of Warhammer 40k, then this isn't a book you'll enjoy. Decius’s eyes flashed at the old veteran’s jibe, but Garro caught the moment and laughed softly, defusing it. Auch er nimmt die Entwicklung um die Warrior Lodges wahr und kann sich mit deren verdeckten Aktivitäten nicht anfreunden. In a preliminary battle to take an outer facility held by the rebels the Death Guard and Emperor's Children encounter a Warsinger, one of the rebel leaders who can create sonic force and inspire their followers through their singing. We get a variety of battle scenes here, ranging from Death Guard Pre-Heresy conflicts to space combat.

And although it was good to read from that point, there wasn't really that excitement that the first three books had. I say so far because there are a shitload more books and it seems like every one I read becomes my favorite. These are amazing action novels dripping with emotion and sentiment that also sometimes piss me off because of the double-crossing and backstabbing, even though by now I should know what to expect.

Swallow is one of Black Library’s authors who you can often count upon to produce a strong, solid Bolter-Porn novel and whilst Flight of the Eisenstein may not be all bolter-porn, it certainly does have a considerable amount of action. This is something that can be safely done with a few, very distinctive characters, but Space Marines are a rather uniform lot, and I found it hard to follow. I genuinely feel ashamed about ever talking about the opening trilogy as the phenomenal first founding of this saga.A bit of a slower pace with this one as we get to see events from the previous book from a different perspective. Along similar lines I was bothered that FOTE began before the events of Galaxy in Flames, which is not immediately a problem, however knowing that the Eisenstein is going to get away doesn't really justify 60% of the book's page time to essentially repeat a large chunk of Galaxy in Flames from a slightly different perspective. The trial of the story begins with an opening engagement (seems to be the norm with early HH novels) against the Jargall, a race of bio-mechanical nobodies if I’m honest. Everything was still fresh and exciting and by the time the new stuff came into play I had a greater appreciation of what was going on because of the added info.

I have still yet to find a Space Marine Legion I can really class as my favourite, but the Death Guard certainly left a good impression upon me, particularly where Garro was concerned, as he was an engaging character. Book 4 took a slightly different tack than with the previous 3 novels, because much of the story focussed on a flight to Terra. It's still not high art, but considering how puerile and simplistic they might have been, I was very pleasantly surprised. Situated both before and after the events of the previous entry, relatively little of this retreads the events there but it certainly gives more layers to events previously covered.

Z. Dunn announced that The Flight of the Eisenstein would be the next Horus Heresy volume to be released, after A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns, as a full-length audio book on CD. Having witnessed the terrible massacre of Imperial forces on Isstvan III, Death Guard Captain Garro seizes a ship and sets a course for Terra to warn the Emperor of Horus' treachery. Here instead, we're given a book of fully-fleshed characters with dreams, desires and motivations, set against a backdrop of war, intrigue and a literal fight for one's soul.
