About this deal

Adding a condensing portion to a conventional boiler is frequently done on large commercial boilers. They give me a way to monitor the intensity of the fire in the stove, as I can see fire shooting up the stove pipe and into the heat exchanger. That cooling air would make it almost impossible for the wood fire kind of heat to damage the aluminum.

ETA: Regarding materials, yeah, I would probably use steel for the heat exchanger, and if it's going to be a a "firetube" design, I wouldn't expect it to last long. I wouldn't want to move that from the room my gas boiler is in though (bathroom, in the cupboard which previously housed bath towels and the like, I have just enough room left now for one shelf only 7.It's not so much a case of "You got what you paid for", as it is a matter of "You DIDN'T get what you DIDN'T pay for, and you're NOT going to get what you thought you were in the way of comfort". I am thinking getting the exhaust down to a single tube that meshes with the flue pipe is preferable. Before my sons Aga was in the house, it was in a narrow boat, he had two 12 volt pumps if one failed the other auto took over, unlike the house thermo syphon could not be used to ensure circulation. I think the tiny fins between the core pipework would be sooted up in very quick time and aren't especially robust.

The heat exchanger could connect into the existing CH system via a three port valve and pump controlled by a thermostat on the flue pipe (when hot, valve opens to allow log burner water to circulate around CH instead of combi boiler). More modern boilers will have lower stack gas temperatures, which means more heat going into the circulating medium. My boiler was built out of a 500gal propane tank that I shortened the length of, and I used a 3/8" wall 36" diameter structural steel pipe for the firebox that I fitted ends on. Take care to align the chimney inlet with the chimney outlet, to assure that the unit will fit properly in place. When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission, which supports our community. They are equipped with an electrical connection box and a thermostat for temperature adjustment for optimal comfort. The Typhoon heat exchanger connection diameter 150 mm and 6 pipes with damper sheet steel increases the heat exchange surface and heat output, saves energy costs and protects the environment. Doing this would allow the unit to retain more heat and re-distribute the heat as the fire dies down, keeping heat output more constant. Maybe I could block off the air direction in the cavity so the air zig zags through for a longer distance as opposed to just blowing straight through.
