There may be another card that would compensate you with two Iron if you lost the bid for it, and another that would allow you to convert Iron to Oil. The highest value token will win the card when the bidding is over, but anyone else who has placed their disks will be compensated based on the value of their losing disk.

Each of the 4 rounds of Furnace begins with players putting their bidding tokens on the line-up of companies that are for sale. Every other card in the game shares this “all business” aesthetic, with five characters and five different starting factories to choose from, draft, or deal randomly.Instead, the box contains some cardboard tokens, wood pieces to represent oil, coal and iron, four wooden discs for each player, and some decks of cards. I would be lying if I failed to admit the superficial fact that my interest in Furnace had everything to do with its box. There is the interesting auction mechanic in which the cards are acquired, and the clever idea for compensation for any losing bid which makes this part of the game a lot of fun too.
