About this deal

It wasn’t shot in 4K, after all, and previous experience of this season via broadcast and Blu-ray hadn’t exactly blown me away on the picture quality front. R. Martin, Game Of Thrones follows kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen as they vie for power. In 4K Ultra HD the colour is now vibrant and the image is clean, crisp and detailed, unlike the washed out colours and pixelation you've probably seen when it was streamed. You are getting one of the most amazing ever shows on television in respect to breadth of storytelling, production value, cinematography, acting, dragons and so much more.

That said, while it sounds excellent for a seven-year-old TV show, maybe because of the original tracks they had to work with in putting the Atmos mix together, it’s not exactly a reference grade effort. For this Ultra HD release, the resulting image has also graded for high dynamic range (both HDR10 and Dolby Vision are included). Extras: Language(s): English, French, Castilian, German, Italian, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Hard of Hearing Subtitles: English, Italian, Subtitles: French, Latin American Spanish, Castilian, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Croatian, Greek, Hebrew, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovenian, Turkish, Complex Chinese, Korean, Thai, Interactive Menu, Screen ratio 1:1.

As you can imagine, and as you’ll know already if you’ve seen the Seasons One and Eight 4K sets, high dynamic range adds much to this image. For Season One the captured image was recorded on HDCAM SR videotape using a tape-based workflow, with color correction done on set. It’s incredible, and reveals tons of details in every frame you’ve probably missed while originally watching the show.

So I feel reasonably well qualified to say that the step up in picture quality delivered by this 4K Blu-ray release goes way further than I’d imagined possible. I would be foolish not to mention how textures in elements such as stones in walls, masonry, sand, dragon scales, feathers on arrows and even vegetation all look incredulous too. If you’re a fan of the show and 4K Disc home media collector, then you’ll remember that the first season (full review HERE) and eighth season (full review HERE) of the show were previously released on the preferred format we’re here to talk about today. The ensemble cast includes Emmy and Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) and Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont).
