The thermocouple relays the temperature of the coffee in the mug to software that tracks the heat level over a four-hour period.

The body of the Travel Mug uses 6 insulating layers with Electra bond coating on the outside and Ceramic fusion coating on the inside. Its inner stainless-steel layers are separated by a chamber of a phase-changing material that turns from solid to liquid as it absorbs heat, and then back to liquid as it releases heat back through the steel to keep your drink warm. Self-heating mugs provide the warmth to extend your sipping time so you won’t find yourself walking back to the microwave to heat up another cup. Take note: For much of the claimed 90-minute battery life, this cup was just shy of that 135˚F target. It only offered three settings: you can set it to keep your coffee hot at 135°F, 140°F, or 145°F, but it has just as long of a battery life as the Ember Travel and works continuously when left on its charger.
