About this deal

From the double Man Booker prize-winner comes an extraordinary work of historical imagination - this is Hilary Mantel's epic novel of the French Revolution. As a young man, Desmoulins falls in love with Annette, the mother, who refuses to have sexual relations with him. He was full of foreboding; never was he allowed to sit on the floor (wearing out your good clothes). I may, in fact - both book and subject matter being so complicated - end up writing more about my own reaction to it than an actual bona fide review.

Now he goes up twice a year, and Vinot--who used to discuss his Life Plan with him when they were students--had walked right past him in the Place Dauphine not knowing him at all. When she sat at her father's table and could not eat, she shoveled the food down to the terrier who sat by her skirts. He imagined the little bird dashing itself in panic against the bars, its wings broken, the thunder rolling overhead. During the Revolution, Danton, as well as the other two protagonists, Desmoulins and Robespierre, join the radical Jacobin faction. While your uncles continue to withhold from me all but the dregs of the district's legal work, I cannot get by from month to month without making inroads into your mother's dowry, which is supposed to pay for your education. I even learnt all the words of the Marseillaise and drove my husband half demented by breaking into song as we drove the dogs up to the park every morning.

We take away your childhoods,we force your ideas in this hothouse air; then we winter you in a climate of despotism. In the current Corona measure ridden world this weirdly resonated with me, the feeling of a system teetering on the brink. He kept her letters for a day or two, read them twice; then, not knowing what to do with them, threw them away. He was Jean Recordain, a merchant from the town; he was a widower, with one (quiet) boy to bring up.It took me about 5 weeks to actually make a start on the reading – partly down to having exams and partly because of the size of it. STRUCTURE: Mantel separates A Place of Greater Safety into fairly long chapters (from 30-odd to sixty-odd pages) and each chapter is divided into smaller little scenes or sections that delve into the comings and goings of her numerous characters. The laborer, exhausted, swayed against the wall, marking the plaster with a long rust-colored streak. I think it is a pity that we bring on your talents, then say to you"--the priest held his palm up--"this far, but no further.

He continued to follow his father about the house, talking incessantly in a de Viefville fashion and rubbishing his opinions. A perfect image of how a text can be viewed both ways, as the woven threads around spaces or holes surrounded by threads. There is one scene, which may be Mantel’s invention, where Robespierre visits Desmoulins in prison and offers to spare his life if he will testify against Danton and the others, but Desmoulins refuses. Mantel suggests that they forced the two of them into sexual relations so that Eléonore would become pregnant and Robespierre would marry her. I found it hard to get my groundings with the book and the story in the beginning – I was waiting for the main event, the Revolution. This was perhaps the pious gloss Anne-Madeleine put on the matter; it was possible of course that not all the Church's martyrs agreed to be gored, and that some, like Georges-Jacques, went armed with pointed sticks. Another playful reference by Ms Mantel to her craft - and this novel has several such winks and nudges - essentially looking at the holes and gaps in history and filling them with her imagination. The one disadvantage of reading a very long book on an e-reader is the inability to easily flick back through the pages, which meant that after that first eye-glazing encounter with the character list, I didn’t consult it again. From the very beginning, Danton has a strong desire for money, unlike Desmoulins, who is content to be a struggling young lawyer until the events of the Revolution overtake him. As with the Cromwell novels, and with the best of any historical fiction, we are left to reflect on a world that is maybe not that much different from our own.
