About this deal

Join Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack as they go on all sorts of thrilling adventures, including River, Circus, Ship and many more. Blyton is, after all, an author about whom the current debate is whether to mock her or despise her.

I have referred to it as a TV movie before and it does very much watch like one, but I am happy to be corrected. When flashing lights are seen in a distant tower, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack decide to investigate - and discover a very sinister plot concealed within its hidden rooms and gloomy underground passages. and so the brother and sister normally stay in Lippinton with their Uncle Geoffrey and his housekeeper, both of whom (according to Lucy-Ann) hate it when the kids are home for the holidays. This is all delivered in what I think is supposed to be a Russian accent, but Rhys-Davies is a bit like Sean Connery and does most things in his own accent. Blyton, I think, believes that all this is an effective twist – because she thinks that shes skillfully set Jojo up to be a villain, and that her readers won’t realise this because we’ll all assume he’s just a normal, stupid, sulky black person. For Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann, Jack and Kiki the parrot, the summer holidays in Cornwall are everything they'd hoped for. Following the events in The Ship of Adventure, Bill marries Mrs Mannering and adopts all the children as his own.

Joe (formerly Jo-Jo) picks them up at the station, and as with the 90s adaptation he is now a white man, however he is still foreign.Ominous rumblings from the ground, a pack of wolves roaming the area, a black fugitive, and Philip's disappearance are but a few of the mysteries the children have to unravel about the mountain. This does not continue on from The Island of Adventure, as it introduces the characters to us again and has them meet for the first time as well. Aunt Polly, who looks "tired and faded," is over-worked and struggles to make ends meet, causing her to be sour-tempered. Then we’re back to following the book as Bill and Philip go down the well to Jack’s rescue and get caught.

These books feature the same child characters: Philip, Jack, Dinah, and Lucy-Ann, along with several adult characters. This did not greatly affect the plot of the stories, though Jack owned a pocket computer which played a significant role in a couple of the adventures, particularly in "The Ship of Adventure".By the end of the book you realize that there is something much more interesting than copper mining going on, and that Bill Smugs is actually a "member of the police" (presumably an undercover detective, although it's never really mentioned outright in this book) by the name of Bill Cunningham. The text is clean and bright and Includes iconic black and white illustrations by the prolific and celebrated children s book illustrator, Stuart Tresilian. The children are unable to tell him Joe’s last name, as apparently Aunt Polly doesn’t know it, or where he came from. I have both movies, “Island of Adventure” and “Castle of Adventure”, but only watched them once, because they simply are not nearly as good as the books. Strange lights on the nearby mysterious island leads to the four's first adventure inside an abandoned copper mine and a network of secret undersea tunnels.

When the plane lands they find themselves in an unfamiliar valley scarred by war and, once again, the four children fall into an adventure involving a lost treasure sought by a band of villains. We start off the book with two separate sets of children (not very happily) living with aunts and uncles.Jack doesn't seem to mind at all that his younger sister Lucy-Ann tags along with him wherever he goes, and he's generally quiet by nature. Philip meets Jack and Lucy-Ann and Jack's pet bird Kiki, and after they sneak home with him, they move in with Philip, his sister Dinah and their Aunt Polly and Uncle Jocelyn at an ancient mansion at the coast. Despite this inevitable feeling of a different era, it has a few universal truths that are often missing from more contemporary and I might say violent works. We are introduced to some of the wild creatures which Philip carries about his person — including mice and a squirrel — and it's interesting, as the series progresses, to see how many different kinds of animals he manages to tame. Discover more titles in the wondrous Adventure series with The Castle of Adventure, The Valley of Adventure, and The Sea of Adventure.
