About this deal

The book contains all the usual elements of a successful thriller - there are hit men, red herrings galore, more twists than a Curly Wurly and above all an engaging team in Thorne and Tanner. In this review, meanwhile, we’re pleased to report that all that passion has been channeled into what is a gripping and at times brutal story.

Et, si le livre se lit bien, la fluidité du style trahit quand même un manque de densité, de contenu. Official figures are that there are around a dozen or so honour killings in the UK each year, with around five thousand each year globally - a thousand of these killings take place in Pakistan alone.Tanner is now on compassionate leave but insists on pursuing the case off the books and knows Thorne is just the man to jump into the fire with her.

Whatever the reason, for obvious reasons Tanner can't investigate the murder herself and instead turns to Tom Thorne, a man who she has met only briefly and knows more by reputation, to help her find the answers she so desperately seeks. Written by Mark Billingham — It must be easy for a series author to fall into a pattern, giving us murder by numbers and keeping an established audience happy with a book a year. Tanner had been investigating suspected hour killings and Thorne had previously investigated the death of Meena Athwal and the case was still unsolved. Set in the near future, Michael C Grumley’s new thriller Deep Freeze probes issues surrounding the quest for immortality. Billingham's passionate depiction of the injustice and brutality that flow from these killings spills from every page, making this one of his most powerful crime novels, written with a fury that does both him and Thorne justice.

Taken off the case, Tanner enlists the help of DI Tom Thorne to pursue a pair of ruthless killers and the broker handing out the deadly contracts. I really love the way in which his relationship with Helen and her son Alfie is explored, and the scenes where he begins to think about the future will truly melt your hardened heart. Tanner, whose own partner was murdered in their home by what she assumes was a case of mistaken identity.

Maybe they're taking extra time to edit out all the usual ebook typos and also add nice reader features like pagination instead of that stupid % thing. There is no honour in the killings described and to use that name is to bestow a false legitimacy on them. Except maybe his relationship with Helen, even after a few books with her she just isn’t a character I have really liked all that much and preferred Thorne when he was a loner however I can appreciate the character development here and Thorne becoming somewhat of a family man.The murderer's motive might have something to do with her recent work on a string of cold-case honour killings she believes to be related. The novel was mostly plot, and had a good pace as a consequence, 500+ pages raced through in just a couple of days. In each chapter, Billingham adeptly unspools a new thread, a new twist, which pushes the reader onward into the story, as he deftly manages an expansive plot without slowing down the momentum of the characters or the story. The late great Merle Haggard provided the accompaniment on the drive to a retail park in Wembley and Thorne sang along to Silver Wings with rather more gusto than he managed in the school hall the day before.
