The spirit has been matured in ex-bourbon refill American oak hogshead casks and is captured at 43% ABV. Oban 14 Year Old is a superb combination of rich sweetness and smoky dryness with fruity notes of oranges, pears and dried figs, plus hints of sea-salt and peat smoke notes. A good lingering finish with the orange zest flavour slowly fading out only for the underlying smoke to endure and last a little longer. One of the last distillery's to operate in the centre of a town, Oban distillery dates back to 1794.

It was founded in 1794 and the West Highland port town of the same name has grown around the distillery. Like many of Scotland’s distilleries, ownership changed multiple times, and the distillery was modernized, too. Even though I love peaty whisky this stands out as a perfect balance between the islands and speyside. It opens with a light, heathery, fruity and zesty sets of smells amongst the initial alcoholic burn.On the nose: There is an initial puff of wax that fades immediately and turns into caramel sauce and bubble gum. This “dustiness” manifests in slightly various ways depending on the whisky; when it comes to this one, it leans more toward stale chocolate chip cookies.

To my surprise, I actually preferred the Aberfeldy 12 from the pack, but would reach for Clynelish 14 over this. It's competing with Springbank 15 (if you can find it) Glendronach and Glenallachie, Edradour, Deanston 18, Glenfarclas 15, various Benromach releases. Overall A true classic, Oban's 14 year old is a great coastal dram for lovers of lightly smoked, fresh malts. The expressive character and the rich aromatic palette, dominated by fruit, outline a rather complex personality for a young whiskey. I think it’s more to do with the fact that you’re using a warmer surface to condense the spirit, therefore the rate of condensation is lower – letting the spirit ‘hang out’ with the copper longer.

The bouquet perfectly reflects the refined spirit of the Oban distillery, and the slightly salty notes give a clean air to the Scottish assortment, balancing it. Flavours of rich fruits, smoky dryness, honeyed spice, and a whiff of sea salt distinguish this full-bodied Highland malt. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.
