The champagne tastes as great as you would expect for a Moët champagne, it is light and fruity while still being dry and rich. Moet's vintage champagne is only made in the best years, which is certainly the case for the 2015 release. We’re your guide, your host, here for novice and connoisseur alike, to share our passion and expertise on a journey from the essentials to the exceptional.
Grand Vintage 2015 – the maison's 76th vintage – is the result of an uncertain year marked by a period of dramatic heat, with the hottest temperatures the region has seen since 1961. The Grand Vintage is a pure expression of the year, blending classic varietals Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.
The enveloping and caressing texture is accompanied by floral, aniseed and mentholated nuances which bring lightness and freshness for such a solar vintage. It is classic in style, medium bodied, from 23% Pinot Meunier, 37% Pinot Noir balanced with 40% Chardonnay and with a dosage of 5 g/l. On the palate, initial notes of fresh brioche, almond and breadcrumbs give way to jasmine and elderflower, with white peach and watermelon coming through for the finish. The bottle itself is similarly classy although in all honesty I do think the label could look better. Owned by the LVMH group since 1987, the house produces unique vintages from a meticulous selection of Champagne terroirs that are renowned worldwide for their quality and appealing character. A dry and hot climate meant that many Champagne houses in the region were not certain the harvest would be a success, but thankfully the red grapes matured with excellence.
The house's rich history includes the friendship link between Napolean Bonaparte and the grandson of the founder, dating from their time at military academy Napoléon was a frequent visitor to Épernay, and the "Imperial" in the name of this Champagne refers to him.
