Mind Over Mood is considered a classic in the field of cognitive behavioral therapy and has helped countless people improve their lives. The authors take us step-by-step in understanding these patients' conditions; their altered perspectives, their thought processes, and the reasons behind their personal views and triggers. And with these case studies the reader is taught how thoughts, moods, environment, events influence each other and ultimately drive specific feelings. This is how the authors teach us "Mind over Mood". Cognitive therapy is a powerful and useful method but I suspect many patients give up because it takes a lot more effort than pharm-therapy. The reader/patient must take full ownership of the process and then not quit. Utilizing what is called a "Thought Record", clients are able to record and analyze situations or events that create anxiety or depression. Then, along with their therapist, they can examine triggers and ways to develop more balanced thoughts which end up improving their mood. We do not have established norms for our Mind Over Mood Depression Inventory (MOM-D) or Mind Over Mood Anxiety Inventory (MOM-A). The Mind Over Mood inventories are more appropriate to use for self-monitoring and to compare client scores over time and document progress in therapy. They are not used to classify depression severity. Book Editions Initially, I thought CBT was the biggest load of rubbish (I didn't understand what it was) and I thought it would be a complete wast of time - how wrong was I. This book was recommended by the group facilitator. I bought this book after my studies had finished, and was absolutely delighted and a little smug that the whole course of CBT was everything that I had studied in my groups, including Changing Core Beliefs (which I thought was impossible, it's not!). I have found no other resource that comes close to this in its efficacy, clarity, and outcome. The basic premise is very simple - - our physical reactions, thoughts, moods, behaviors and environment are all connected. The workbook starts with helping clients to understand their problems. They are then taught to identify the underlying thoughts and moods that contribute to these perceived problems. They are shown how some of their thoughts and feelings are automatic but that there are alternatives and options for change. Discover simple yet powerful steps you can take to overcome emotional distress—and feel happier, calmer, and more confident. Readers who want to learn skills for balancing their thoughts, having less extreme emotional reactions, lowering their anxiety and experiencing happier moods would likely enjoy Mind Over Mood. We also use information we have about the client, common human experiences, and “standard” questions that often yield helpful information. Of course these all give us suggestions about a possible therapeutic destination. But I think it is important to hold this imagined destination at arm’s length so one is truly open to hearing what the client has to say. I am already a professional counsellor working from a Cognitive Behavioural approach.In my CBT Boot Camp workshop, I teach the principles of Socratic questioning and include other topics essential to developing skills as a cognitive therapist. Of course, guided discovery must be balanced to match the time available. This is why it is important to only use guided discovery in the session to test out really central beliefs, not everything discussed. To be clear, there is lots of straightforward discussion and teaching in a CBT session. Guided discovery is only used when testing beliefs or evaluating emotional responses/behavioral choices. It then goes on to talk about how our thoughts can influence our emotions and behaviors. The book provides exercises for helping us to change our thinking patterns and improve our moods. Greenberger has written several other books on mental health, including The Worry Cure and CBT for Dummies. He is an expert on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is the main focus of Mind Over Mood. Is it not preferable for the therapist to have some idea of where he may be going in terms of a therapeutic destination , but at the same time be flexible enough to embark upon alternative routes suggested by the client? I have used Mind Over Mood in my clinical work with patients for 20 years and have found that the second edition is even more helpful than the first. It is a great book for adults and not such a great book for kids, as it is not written at their level, and as the clinical vignettes are about adults with adult problems. Mind Over Mood is an amazing resource that any adult could benefit from reading and practicing the exercises it contains. The worksheets in the book can be a helpful resource to work on with a therapist trained in CBT, especially because it can be hard for people to effectively complete a thought record on their own.
