The thrilling adventures and colourful life of this legendary figure filled a whole saga, but don’t worry if your Old Norse is a bit rusty: we’ll give you the jist of it right here. In one scene, you are placed in the center of a longhouse, and they show the depression in the floor, just as can be seen in books.

And reading very much like The Good Bits of a Saga, complete with riddles and sword fights and prophecies and ships and wolves and all the things you want in a Viking tale! He discovered signs of an earlier culture, now known to be the Dorset people, who had inhabited the island from around 500 BCE before abandoning it due to a change in the climate that saw temperatures increase. Arnulf refuses to join them, denying that the island is sinking, up to the very moment he and the other islanders are swallowed by the waves. This temperature increase conflicted with the Dorset people’s hunting methods, but made Greenland's west coast a viable alternative for Norse farmers from Iceland. I can't stress enough how brilliant this book would be to read young boys and girls as an epic bedtime story.It might be said as a mild criticism that Jones has not written a book for girls as well as for boys; the absence of strong female characters and/or a female perspective might be construed as disadvantageous. Told, as in the real sagas, in very episodic form, this is the adventure of Erik and his crew on the Golden Dragon as they travel the world taking on deceitful trolls, Dogfighters (your actual dogs of war), mystical mountains and go on to adventures at the edge pf the world and outwit The Old Man of The Sea. This meant, essentially, that they were considered enemies of the state and could be hunted down and punished without trial.
