At her commissioning in August of 1940, the Bismarck appeared as most any other battleship of the period with wood decks and a gray hull and upperworks with anti-fouling red below the waterline. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. While being pursued by British ships and aircraft, the ship was disabled on May 27, 1941 and sank in the Atlantic.
