About this deal

She always tried to stay awake those nights when the stars winked and the moon was just a cresting sliver smiling provocatively down at the world, the way pretty women on vintage billboards used to smile as they sold cigarettes and limeade. if you do, another, ah, girl thing but I’ll admit: acquagrill did make terribly good chocalate martinis. What I liked about how the author handled the small-town aspect was that it didn’t end with a bow and the Waverly’s being accepted and included in the high society of the other families introduced in the book. A friend of mine recommended this book to me about a month ago, giving the author and the story high praise. Claire hires Sydney to help out with the catering, and as luck would have it Sydney's first assignment is serving at a party being thrown by her old boyfriend Hunter John Matteson and his wife Emma.

But then the apple tree started throwing apples and the story took on a life of its own…and my life hasn't been the same since. This is a tale of coming home, of building bridges, of sibling rivalry and understand and of the tiniest hint of magic. Taught the fine art of table place settings at an early age, she has never quite shaken off her inherited urge to rebel. Claire is a Waverly, which means she tends to a garden and knows its secrets — what the plants can do to a person — and how to use them. She closed and locked the heavy gate door to the garden, then crossed the driveway at the back of the ostentatious Queen Anne-style home she'd inherited from her grandmother. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire's rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before. Most people in town treated Evanelle kindly but with amusement, and even Evanelle didn't take herself too seriously.

Evanelle arrives early and reveals to Claire and Sydney that their mother ate an apple from their tree many years earlier, and most likely saw the car accident in which she was to die.

Later Claire takes Tyler several casseroles which are intended to make him uninterested in her, but they don't work on him. Form the dough into a round shape inside the pan, sprinkle over sea salt and more dried lavender, and drizzle with some garlic olive oil. A minute later she came back in and handed him the paper bag with a bottle of rose geranium wine in it. Garden Spells is a rare and mesmerizing novel, brimming with light and fierce joy and the sharp shadows that must accompany such a tale.

This is the first Sarah Addison Allen book I read, and I have visited this book many times since I first read it, and never fails to enchant me each time (as well as increase my desire to visit the south of Allens books). There, an apple tree bearing fruit of magical properties looms over a garden filled with herbs and edible flowers that possess the power to affect in curious ways anyone who eats them. He grabbed the white blazer hanging on the back of his chair and put it on over his short-sleeved black shirt. They all have the sort of strange, quirky magical feeling to them, and they all contain some element of romance as well – and there are some serious themes. If you suspend belief, perhaps, and allow yourself to be carried away by this wonderful piece of literature, you will be in for a magical and delightful summer read.
