About this deal

And fat? Fat is oil. Fat tends to mean an animal by-product but folks, so is petrolium. Crude oil is really, really, really old fat. A super-sharp tip will break under pressure, but overall I found that these pencils kept a good point and would provide a lot of coverage before needing to be sharpened. There were no issues with lead breakage during sharpening. In comparing to the similar Caran D’Ache Luminance, (which developed lots of crumbs under heavy pressure,)the Lightfast had a cleaner lay down. But it still was not as smooth as a soft wax-based pencil such as the Derwent Coloursoft or Prismacolor Premier.

I use a lot of coloured pencils in my work. For me, the characteristics of a high quality pencil have a soft and buttery feel with a vibrant and even placement of colour. Holbein uses high grade pigments which exhibit little fading or discolouration by light. So while Holbein twiddled their thumbs and ignored the US market, I kept quiet about my secret love. Holbein come pre-sharpened… kinda. They’re sharpened to a shallow point but not enough to actually put a real point on the end— the tippy-tip is quite flat which makes the sharpening is completely useless. Be prepared to spend time sharpening the entire set before coloring.

Holbein Colored Pencil Features.

And I couldn’t use Holbeins in any project shared online because one of you would ask for supply info. What would you do? Buy them from the UK and pay almost twice the price? The Meltz blender is a nice addition, and although not necessary to enjoy the pencils, it made some really beautiful textures. With the blender it almost made the Holbein pencils into water soluble pencils which would be great if you already really enjoy using Holbein pencils but you’d like to get a bit more for your money. I personally enjoy mixed media, layering and texture in my work so to be able to use the pencil with the blender was surprisingly enjoyable and I will be including it in my practice from now on. Not a hard, crumbly, brittle pencil, but something oil based and stiffer. The firmer the pencil, the more control you’ll get from it. Holbein Artists Colored Pencils Before reading this review, I would like to inform you that as of November 27th it was brought to my attention that the Holbein Colored Pencils have not been fully tested for sale in the US. Holbein offers about 18 browns and beiges which run from warm red browns to cool chocolate umbers. A nice selection.

Some of the colors were a bit softer than others, and those softer colors usually had the most intense pigmentation. Others were a bit harder and that resulted in a lighter application.Holbein offers 2 whites, one “White” and one “Soft White”. Soft white does not mean beige. The Soft White core is physically softer and soapier in feel, similar to Derwent’s Chinese White Drawing Pencil. Holbein white is dense with a hint of translucency like Prismacolor White. I strongly recommend all four white pencils mentioned in this paragraph. Originally, The Art Gear Guide and COLORED PENCIL Magazine had arranged to feature the Holbein Artists Colored Pencils in the August issue, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Holbein review had to be temporarily put on hold. Despite this, I have finally got round to reviewing the Holbein colored pencil, so here it is and I hope it has been worth the delay. Like the Faber-Castell GRIP, these do not have color names on the barrel, but the entire barrel matches the core color. The barrels themselves have a rubbery, grippy coating that is pleasant to use (and that I’d love to see on some artist-grade pencils!) There is no lightfastness rating as these are not intended as artist pencils.
