About this deal

That's why, with the introduction of the professional EOS-1D Mark III camera and LP-E4 battery in 2007, Canon added a new menu item. The Canon EOS R6 has a resolution of 3.69-million dots at 60fps, compared with the R5’s 5.76-million dots at 120fps. The R5’s higher resolution and faster frame rate should mean it delivers a more organic visual experience, closer to that of an optical viewfinder.

Unfortunately I've just bought a power bank PD 3.0 that has only 18W output, 9V@2A... R5 is not charging. Then I found somewhere that the output needs to be at least 45W. Is this true? I suspect it's possible that IF your camera had its wireless mode enabled, AND was in proximity to your phone which had also had the Canon Camera Connect App running you could have had a communications link running that drew down the battery. Because it's aimed more at the hobbyist shooter than the professional, the EOS R6 has two SD UHS-II card slots, while the R5 caters to pros with one SD UHS-II and one CFexpress slot. It's also worth noting that a recent firmware update, version 1.3.0, has brought the very useful Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3) format, which lets you achieve wide dynamic range and means its slots nicely into workflows that also include footage shot on Canon's EOS Cinema cameras. The update also brings a slo-mo 120p option for Full HD recording, though sadly the 30-minute recording limit for video files remains. The Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip is designed for use on both the Canon R5 and R6 mirrorless camera bodies. It will hold up to two extra Canon LP-E6NH batteries and extends the cameras battery life for longer shooting sessions, such as at weddings or events. It has an ergonomic, tactile handle that mimics the camera's handgrip and has vertical controls and shutter release for portraiture orientation. More

Although the R5 isn't directly replacing any current model it does bring a strong set of specs to the table over a lot of its competitors. The ability to shoot 8K 12-bit video internally, IBIS up to 8 stops and 45MP images that can be captured at up to 20fps with autofocus. One of the biggest differences between these two full-frame cameras is their sensors. While the Canon EOS R5 has a brand-new 45MP sensor, the EOS R6 uses a chip that's very similar to the 20.1MP one found in the Canon 1D X Mark III. If you’re a high-volume, high-speed filmmaker, you might find the EOS R5's heat constrictions a little onerous. But during our half-day documentary shoot, where we shot in a variety of formats, we didn't see any overheating warnings. But I would start with a PD 3.0 supply and go from there. But again this is very risky as Canon hasn't given any specs, so try at your own risk. Or, the headliner: 8K video. Again, the option of shooting raw is there, at 30, 25, 24 or 23.98fps, and at a galactic bitrate of approximately 2,600Mbps. Opting to shoot H.265 files, at the same settings, lowers the bitrate to about 1,300Mbps, while H.264 lowers it further to 300Mbps. Video performance is excellent as well. We tested the EOS R5 on a small half-day documentary shoot (see above),capturing just over 240GB of 4K video for a total of a shade over 55 minutes overall.

The EOS R5 is still substantial-feeling, with a deep grip that makes it easy and comfortable to hold, but it’s also easy to tote around without it feeling burdensome. Weather resistance is said to be up to the standard of Canon's 5D series, which professionals will tell you means the R5 should withstand troublesome weather better than some photographers. We’d be confident in most situations. Personally, I carry three sets of batteries for my R5 with BG-R10 battery grip as I'm a belt and suspenders type. I've never used more than one set of batteries and assume that one set of batteries should last about 1,000 shots. Also from the rumor mill, people say that the camera/lenses can malfunction below 60%. I've never seen this but carry extra batteries just in case. An 18W PD battery should be able to charge the LP-E6NH (only; note only the newer "NH" designated battery) when the power to the camera is OFF. You cannot have the camera ON and charge with 18W.

Camera batteries have evolved over the years. Whilst this can be frustrating if you’re upgrading and suddenly your old batteries are of no use, the technology inside your camera battery is getting better. The final and possibly most important information is the recharge performance. This shows the battery’s condition and its ability to supply power. The new EOS R5 sits in the hand like a more streamlined version of an EOS DSLR (like the 5D Mark IV). The dials and buttons have a similar placement and the front grip is large. If you already shoot Canon this will feel new, but completely familiar. The body feels tough and looks to have a robust, practical, ergonomic style that shouts, ‘modern working professional'. As Nasim noted in his review of the Canon EOS R6, Canon’s entry into the mirrorless market three years ago was not the most exciting moment for Canon shooters. By comparison, Canon made a big splash when they released the R5 and R6 in 2020. I have a dummy battery which also needs a usb power via pd (only one of my mains chargers worked). Haven’t tried any rechargeable larger batteries to but in due course I will.

TechRadar reported excellent battery life at 2300+ shots with a LP-E6NH and EVF (unclear if 60 hz or 120 hz). Batteries can also deteriorate if left flat or stored for a long time without use. This means that even if you have not used the camera much the battery condition may still have suffered. Professionals are hard on their Canon gear, and no other single piece of equipment shows the wear and tear more than the humble camera battery. In the past it's required Canon's Digital Photo Professional software, but on the Canon EOS R5 it lets you make tweaks in-camera with a new feature called 'portrait relighting'. If you've taken someone's portrait and the light is coming strongly from one side, you can move your thumb around the screen and change the direction of the light source, creating the illusion that the light's coming from a different area. Effectively, it looks a bit like having a digital reflector that you can apply in post-production. We haven't seen it in action yet, but it's something we're keen to try out on the EOS R5. Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: ConnectivityThis means the R6 is likely to be slower when it comes to transferring your images elsewhere, while the R5 gets some significant boosts in this regard that reflect its pro leanings. Number of shots is not a great indicator of performance for these cameras. They are super fast and the main source of power drain is maintaining the EVF and / or LiveView. If you take a lot of bursts at 20 electronic, you'll get many more shots conpa9to somebody who spends a lot of time composing and only takes a picture occasionally. In both cases, I think the actual number of minutes spent using the camera would vary far less. I've found my R to show low voltage when I used my old dummy battery and power supply, but it works just the same.
