About this deal

The characters are superbly portrayed. Who could not love and admire Nell for abandoning the claustrophobic craziness and striking out on her own? Or Dom for becoming the quintessential 'city boy' in retaliation to his parents loose and louche lifestyle? The illustrations are glorious: the perfect balance of cute and creepy. There are snippets of them throughout the story too, making it feel an extra-special and spooky tale. Since finishing this book I've been thinking how to voice my admiration for the author. I don't like rehashing the story because that's what blurbs are for, but I really do want to write down how this book made me feel after finishing it.

What drew me in to The Skeleton Key were a) the cover of the book, which seemed to promise both magic and ordinary life and b) the fact that it was built around a book. In this case, a treasure hunt book that's now 50 years old, involves a quest to re-assemble a skeleton, has a world-wide, obsessive fan base, and has shaped the lives of two close families—one the author/illustrator's, the other his best friend's. Who hasn't wondered what a certain key in their set of keys might actually be for? A long forgotten desk drawer, a cupboard, a gate, a long lost door? Well, the narrator and reader's companion of this story (Skeleton Keys), has 10 keys (instead of fingers), and he knows exactly where they will take him - it might be places you'd rather not go! Keys open gateways to possibilities, and this story is full of them. The main protagonist, Ben, who is ten years old, struggles through life with no friends, apart from those of his imagination (the Gorblimey and Daisy). The central theme to the book is friendship, one that all children will need to deal with at some point: Who should he trust? Will his friends come to his birthday party? Why does his dad struggle to believe him so much? What should you do about a friend who makes the wrong choices? Can he rescue his kidnapped friend? I am usually hooked on books by this author but unfortunately this one didn’t grip me, maybe because I’m not a fan of treasure hunts.

I found it slow, boring and predictable The "book quest" feels like just a prop for what is essentially the story of two-not really interesting- dysfunctional families. Characters, for all the drama, felt flat for me.

Finally, the social media feeds that intersperse the narrative are acutely observed with comments that come from the land of the utterly ridiculous and your question where brains are! They really add an extra dimension to the situations that unfold. Guy is an award-winning author whose children's books series include Stitch Head, Skeleton Keys, Dinkin Dings, Spynosaur, The Legend of Frog and Atomic! In 2010 Dinkin Dings and the Frightening Things won the Blue Peter Award for Most Fun Book with Pictures. On December the 25th, one man delivers presents to all the children around the world. But what he does for the other 364 days a year has remained a mystery. Aidan Abetloves to help the teacher. It makes him popular with the teachers but veryunpopular with everyone else. But when substitute Miss Vowel strides into school with a rather unusual mini-zoo, Aidan has a choice to make – he can listen to the animals, or he can become the Ultimate Teacher’s Pet. Guy spent his childhood reading comics and hoping one day to become a superhero. He spends his adulthood in more or less the same way.Another stunning piece of literature from the pen of Erin Kelly. One rich, dysfunctional family, one violent treasure hunt and a whole host of secrets sit at the centre of this tale. In the final chapter of the novel, it is revealed that when Alex explained his predicament to Prescott, his office heard their conversation through Prescott's radio, which was still turned on. They immediately notified MI6, who in turn warned the Russians. Alex is depressed after everything he has been through, but Sabina approaches him and invites him on holiday with her family in France for a couple of weeks, which cheers Alex up. The positives are mostly with the characterisation. These two families are immensely entwined, kind of like a bunch of Christmas lights you can’t seem to untangle. The parents have been friends for decades, the son of one family is married to the daughter of the other family. There is a lot of history here, decisions that were made for the good of the two families, secrets that are being kept hidden for the same reason. But all is about to fall apart. It’s Summer 2021 and also the 50th anniversary of the book “the Golden Bones” written by Frank Churcher. The book consists of pictures, part story and also a treasure hunt for fans of the book. Nell has been told to come home and celebrate with the family. And also, the launch of an app to coincide with the book and help them in a quest find the last of the missing bones. Skeleton Key is the third book in the Alex Rider series written by British author Anthony Horowitz. The book was released in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2002, and in the United States on April 28, 2003. But now the Churchers must be reunited. The book is being reissued along with a new treasure hunt and a documentary crew are charting everything that follows. Nell is appalled, and terrified. During the filming, Frank finally reveals the whereabouts of the missing golden bone. And then all hell breaks loose. But as Ben battles to save his new friend from Oblivion, the Gorblimey is soon the least of Skeleton Keys’ worries. For strange things happen when imaginations run wild and it seems that there’s more than one unimaginary in town. And the other unimaginary is definitely dangerous and out for revenge… Overall, this is a good homage to Masquerade by Kit Williams which is a much loved book of the author.

In this delightful natural and cultural history of bone, Brian Switek explains where our skeletons came from, what they do inside us, and what others can learn about us when these artifacts of mineral and protein are all we’ve left behind. A solid winner from Erin Kelly, The Skeleton Key is a perfect choice for all fans of the family saga with a mystery woven thru it. They are complicated families, their past and current lives closely entwined. Just how closely entwined becomes apparent during the course of the book. They support one another, play off against one another. Their children marry one another. It's all just one big happy family. Or is it? A fabulous, rip roaring, funny, touching, clever story. It is made nigh on perfect by Pete Williamson’s wonderful illustrations. The book just wouldn’t be the same without them. This is my favourite book out of the whole series and I recommend everyone to read the whole series! My favourite character is Luna Moon....Greetings! To the imaginary and the unimaginary! To the living, the dead and everyone in between, my name is Keys… Skeleton Keys. And these fantabulant fingers of mine can open doors to hidden worlds and secret places … doors to the limitless realm of all the imagination.” Smart, lively, and hugely informative, Skeleton Keys is the ideal guide to the bones around us and in us.”—Elizabeth Kolbert, author of The Sixth Extinction I sit here now crossing my extraordinary kneecaps… I can see them better thanks to Switek’s keys.”—Rose George, The New York Times Book Review Overall, The Skeleton Key is another sophisticated, vivid, creepy tale by Kelly that does a fantastic job of delving into all the complex, dysfunctional dynamics that can occur between family members and reminds us just how toxic and evil, and yet somehow still loyal some of these relationships can truly be.
