About this deal

The victim -- yes, more vocal detractors are at this moment deploying such hyperbolic language -- isn't the consumer or the fan. If anything, it's Friends. This is not the definitive box set many have been imagining since its announcement, nor is it everything it could be. There will be some who refuse to revisit the series on Blu-ray out of principle and others who will convince themselves that lossless audio would somehow make the show funnier than it already is. Still others will dismiss the broadcast versions of the episodes entirely, particularly if they're well acquainted with the extra jokes and gags from the DVD seasons' extended episodes. Broadcast or extended, though, Friends remains funny. Hilarious even, if you aren't harboring a late '90s grudge or any lingering animosity toward Matthew Perry. (An entire camp of TV junkies despise the show all because of poor Chandler. Baffling. He's my favorite Central Perker.) Some episodes are sharper than others, sure. The same could be said of some seasons. Even at its lowest points, though, Friends entertains. Gag Reel (SD, 10 min) – A gag reel seems like a no-brainer for a show like this, so it's a bit surprising that it took six seasons to get one. It's nice to see the cast fumble and be real with each other, and some of the flubs are quite funny.

This compiles all ten seasons of the iconic and world renowned American sitcom, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. Side guide

The One That Goes Behind the Scenes is a reasonably extensive fifty-minute documentary by Discovery Channel that details the production of the show and takes audiences inside how it's made in the writer's room and on set. This documentary features many interviews and insider footage that makes it a worthwhile supplement for fans.

But while the group might appear as every-people, the individual characters have wonderfully charming and three-dimensional personalities. While this is a sitcom, the great thing about having ten seasons is that it gave almost everyone a chance to develop in a host of important situations. You get to see the true size of Joey's big heart, and what happens when you break it an episode like "The One with Chandler in a Box". Phoebe, who often appears to be a space cadet, is also the most perceptive, often knowing what everyone else thinks and feels before they do. Ross and Rachel of course have their famous on-again, off-again relationship (that's really more off than on), but both also develop as individuals. Rachel in particular has a great arc, going from the rich brat who came in from the rain to a strong, independent single mother. Friends arrives on Blu-ray with 1080p widescreen transfers remastered from the 35mm film elements. This is the first time Friends has ever been released on home media in widescreen. Friends was only released on DVD in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. Friends Visit The Ellen DeGeneres Show (16 min.) is a sit-down with Ellen for some of the Friends actors. The interviews were recorded separately but this should still be an exciting supplement for fans of Friends and Ellen (who had her own awesome sitcom, of course). Each commentary is with Kevin Bright (executive producer), Marta Kauffman (co-creator, executive producer) and David Crane (co-creator, executive producer) unless otherwise indicated. Certain episodes contain the three usual commentators and select guests. Friends ran on NBC for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004, and centered on six friends in their twenties and thirties who lived in New York City. The six main cast members recently reunited for only the second time in the past 17 years to film a reunion special for HBO Max.Friends on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (SD, 22 minutes): Jay sits down with Schwimmer, LeBlanc and Matthew Perry (in Central Perk no less) moments after the actors watched the final episode for the first time. A few minutes later, he invites Aniston, Kudrow and Courtney Cox into the spotlight. Finally, with six minutes to spare, the entire cast shares the stage.

Audio Commentaries – Commentaries for "The One with the Holiday Armadillo", "The One with Joey's New Brain", and "The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding" parts one and two with Bright, Kaufman, and Crane. Costume designer Debra McGuire also comments on "The One with the Holiday Armadillo", and she's a welcome and smart addition, as that particular episode has some very memorable costumes. Audio Commentaries – Commentaries for "The One Where Ross Got High", "The One That Could Have Been", and "The One With The Proposal" parts one and two with Bright, Kaufman, and Crane. This Complete Collection shows how these young friends help each other through their day to day lives and struggles, always being there for each other, and always somehow ending up in awkward, yet hilarious situations. It's always difficult surviving in the real world, but it helps if you have friends. (Cat Emerson) This release doesn't hit a home run but for what it's worth it's one of the best and most exciting Blu-ray releases for a television series to date. It presents one of television's greatest series in a way that is immeasurably better than any previous home video release when it comes down to picture quality. This collection may end up being considered as one of the most controversial Blu-ray releases, but I love the set and am happy owning it this way. I expect there are many Friends fans who would be thrilled owning a collection of every episode in High Definition. Warner Bros. has released a set that is absolutely worth owning. You just have to overlook certain hiccups and make those purchasing decisions accordingly.

Friends: Other Seasons

True Friends Documentaries : Friends from the Start, When Friends Become Family, and The Legacy of Friends. These three documentaries explore the development of the show, its cast's unity and chemistry and how that helped to define the show as the gigantic success it became, and the lasting impact of the series. All told, these three documentaries offer over an hour of new material for Friends fans. Unfortunately, there are no appearances from the original cast leads. Friends' on Location in London (SD, 2 min) – The finale of season four takes place in London, and this featurette briefly looks at the logistics of that decision. Friends on Location in London (SD, 2 minutes): A much too short look at the show's hop across the pond. Behind the Style: The Look of Friends (SD, 20 minutes): Substantial documentaries are few and far between, but "Behind the Style" is a refreshingly substantiative trip behind the scenes with costume designer Debra McGuire, hair stylist Jonathan Hanousek and makeup artist Robin Siegel.

Like most shows that went on for ten years, Friends didn’t end on its strongest note. The last couple of seasons were weaker than much of what came before it, with some questionable storylines – Joey and Rachel!? – and an overall feeling of been there, done that. But most of Friends holds up very well, with plenty of classic storylines and episodes – my personal favorite era being the end of Season 4/beginning of Season 5, as the “Chandler and Monica keep their relationship a secret” storyline played out. The picture quality is grainy and has some softness overall. Yet it's a decidedly film-like transfer for each episode, there are no issues with abundant DNR or other manipulations, and everything looks free of any dirt or other problematic issues of the sort. There are also some minor issues in regards to color and contrast during many of the episodes, and this will be bothersome to some. However, these aren't deal-breaker issues. Mostly, I thought the show looked beautiful. There are some issues bust most of these issues are inherent to the time of the production and to the source material.Friends: The Complete Series includes an exclusive bonus disc that is only included in this Blu-ray edition of the series. The main inclusion, the " True Friends Documentaries" are presented with 1080p High Definition transfers. There is a separate mini-book that contains an introduction for the Blu-ray set that was written by Kevin Bright (executive producer), Marta Kauffman (co-creator, executive producer) and David Crane (co-creator, executive producer). The book then contains a season by season breakdown for every episode with titles, writing/directing credits, brief descriptions, and commentary info. Special features are also listed for each respective season and for the bonus disc. Lastly, some beautiful promotional pictures of the cast have been included on several sheets throughout the booklet. The following video supplements are included across the seasons and are presented in 1.33:1 full frame (as presented on the original DVD releases): Behind the Style: The Look of 'Friends' (SD, 20 min) – Costume designer Debra McGuire, hair stylist Jonathan Hanousek, and makeup artist Robin Siegel. McGuire has the most to say, discussing how the clothing choices embodied the personality of each character. The others aren't bad, but there's not as much to talk about with hair and makeup. In a perfect release (given the quality situation with the extended material masters), Warner Bros. would have included the DVD discs within this set so that all fans would be able to at least have the option to switch between the extended and original broadcast versions. This option would be beneficial to fans in the video department area as well because then a fan could choose between viewing the high definition widescreen presentations and the original 4:3 full frame versions ( see the video section for more details).
