About this deal

This bittersweet story explores the profound power of regret, forgiveness, and the resilience of the human spirit. While this book is slow-moving and heavily reliant on dialogue rather than descriptions (something that I really, really enjoy but others may not like), I absolutely fell in love with the story and the little lessons woven into each narrative. Time travel is at the heart of this series, set in a peculiar bijou back-street Tokyo cafe, where a cup of coffee offers more than just a caffeine buzz, and the opportunity to go back in time is open to anyone who can follow the strange set of rules.

The clumsy writing joining the scenes means this never feels like coming together as a novel, and the ending doesn’t help either, coming across as a little too obvious, abrupt and sickly-sweet.This was such a character-driven story with so much heart and puts you in the shoes of those characters and you become connected to their pain and suffering as the story evolves. Most people have regrets and can remember times in their past when they wish they’d said something different, or said anything at all, and Kawaguchi has created a little world where it’s possible to change this, and where the chance to replay scenes is more than just wishful thinking. At best the poor thing limps along well under the speed limit, an ominous cacophony of clunking sounds and grinding noises issuing from under the hood. As for repetitive, the book, while a novel, is in many ways really just four short stories that are essentially variations of the same set up and (to a degree at least) the same conclusion. The author beautifully told us how to face the death of our loved ones in this book by convincing us to stay happy and always keep on smiling so that the person who died can see us happy from the dark box (The author compares death to a dark box in this novel) to make him/her also happy. Before the Coffee Gets Cold began life as a play before being turned into a novel, and there’s also been a recent film adaptation (with the English title of Café Funiculi Funicula). Their narratives are delicately woven together to produce a tale of love, loss, and hope that is sure to bring a few tears to your eyes.

But there are as many curious and magical details to the time travel itself as there are characters to meet. The author shows us that hope is one of the most important things in our life via these two characters. This paragraph goes on for a while, and you wonder whether Kawaguchi really thought it was a good idea, or whether Trousselot decided that this was information the reader needed (I really hope not…).
