About this deal

It adjusts gamma based on the ambient light and when on, there's a five-position slider to adjust it. With Fast mode on—the default setting for Game picture mode—my Bodnar meter measured the lag for 1080p, 60Hz input at 16. However, the TH685 is the only one of the three that also supports HLG, which gives it an important edge.

Its potential is undoubtedly hamstrung a bit by the projector only carrying a mono 5W speaker system, but nonetheless this beamer actually sounds much better than expected, throwing its audio a good distance clear of its enclosure, keeping dialogue clear and convincing, and delivering on the promise of lots of subtle audio detailing. In the Bright picture mode the image is noticeably and unpleasantly green but measures an impressive 2,782 lumens. Projectors in general are notorious for having lag that can top 100ms, which would cause a game's response to feel sluggish or that your reflexes are slow. Even when watching HDR, with the lamp running at full tilt, fan noise is low enough and constant enough to be relatively easy to tune out.Like its entry-level sibling, the TH685P offers a 3,500 ANSI lumen rating and is built around a single 1,920-by-1,200-pixel DLP chip The rated 1080p native resolution is based on the projector lighting up a maximum of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels at a time, with the extra 120 rows of pixels used to add a vertical digital shift. On the front left face of the projector you’ll find the fan that operates at a fairly quiet 50db – which is a bit more than a whisper, but not much. It is perfect for fast-paced sports, reaction-critical shooters, and timing-dependent battle arenas.

audio loopthrough; powered USB port; D-Sub PC input; monitor output BRIGHTNESS (CLAIMED): 3,500 Lumens CONTRAST (claimed): 10,000:1 ZOOM: 1. com are manufactured to strict standards and submitted to a high level of controls and tests relating to the projector's performance. For something better suited to the outdoors, though, check out our guide to the best outdoor projectors. Gain and bias calibration allowed me to improve the overall grayscale, but there were still some inaccuracies in the midtones due to elevated luminance. The color wheel's white segment lets it deliver a brighter image than you would get from an otherwise identical projector without one.

I didn't see any crosstalk in my tests, and saw only the moderate level of 3D-related motion artifacts that is typical for 3D projectors.

So while the issues may count as significant for people who like watching movies in a really dark room as much as they like playing games, they may not be a deal breaker for more casual users. It measured 2,705 ANSI lumens on our sample, which is just over 77% of the published spec of 3,500 ANSI lumens. Once plugged in, the dongle lays flat against the back of the projector and can be protected and hidden by the plastic cover. It's hard to see details in dark scenes in games, and almost impossible if you have dark and light areas on the screen at once. The BenQ TH685i has seven different SDR picture modes—Bright, Living Room (which is its default), Cinema, Sports, Game, User 1, and User 2. On the top of the projector you’ll find the physical controls that offer most basic functionality, however there’s no horizontal keynote, so you’ll need to make sure the projector can sit directly facing the wall without any angling.

Resolution - Again, I'm not 100% convinced it's actually native 1080p, but text is very blocky and the aliasing is pretty obvious during play. The HDMI ports don’t carry 4K signal, obviously, but do carry and recognize HDR, which is nice if you plan on connecting an Apple TV 4K or a similarly specced streaming device. One of the biggest gaming hurdles projectors still deal with is input lag—the amount of time it takes a button press on a controller to cause a reaction on screen. The BENQ TH685 generic lamp is a bare bulb without plastic housing and is produced by an authorised manufacturer of generic bulbs.
