Happy Meal, written by Tabby Lamb and Breathless by Laura Horton are both winners of prestigious Fringe First Awards, after captivating audiences in Edinburgh last summer.I got Arts Council funding for this on my fifth attempt after a year and a half of applying which has now run out, so I turned it into a CIC, but I just don’t have time to try and get funding for it.

Breathless is a funny, honest and stylish exploration of the knife-edge of hoarding, from the joy to the addiction and suffocating shame. One imagines that with a play about hoarding, the stage would be crammed with piles of stuff, but director Stephanie Kempson has opted instead for two rails lined with empty clothing bags. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Following our recent news on Laura and her play Breathless, our Trustee, Sharon and I were lucky enough to see it before its transfer to Edinburgh. As she is challenged by Jo to stop pretending, her parents are supportive and the moment when things begin to change comes from an unexpected direction.

She was listed in The Stage 100 in 2021 for her project Theatre Stories CIC and is an artistic associate of The Space, London. And so minimalist Jo enters her life, a perfect match in (almost) every way but fatally suspicious of Sophie’s Herculean efforts to stop her entering the flat as the two worlds collide with percussive results. No such doubts come to mind with Laura Horton’s latest play, Breathless, a semi-autobiographical 70-minute account of hoarding clothes. MacMahon is a versatile solo performer and engaging storyteller, voicing many characters from Sophie’s girlfriend Jo, her Dad, shady ex-boyfriend and snotty magazine colleagues with swift physical pen portraits for them all.

Trying to provide a gap for emerging and established, because it’s just quite woeful, there was an article quite recently I think in the Stage in someone said “We’re creating a culture of Primark playwrights”. Huge thanks to Laura for sharing this on such an important topic, and although I can't be at the Fringe this year, I definitely hope to catch the show elsewhere in the future.Which is wonderful for me because obviously it means, it’s so much stress organizing accommodation for everyone, travel, I have so much respect for producers, its such a hard job and it’s quite thankless a lot of the time. When she plays Jo, her voice drops an octave, emphasising Sophie’s vulnerability as she takes the slow road to recovery.
