Warner has wisely given this a new 16:9 transfer (as the original was full-frame) just in time for what will be the Holiday Season. It is safe to say that this is the best that National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation has looked on home video. There are a few Christmas films that really embody the spirit of Christmas for me, the main ones being A Christmas Story, Die Hard (duhhhh! Daughters Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Rusty (this time played by Johnny Galecki who will go on to be famous as Leonard in “Big Bang Theory) have to give up their rooms to bunk with each other, while the rest of the extended family is crammed in. Closed captions refer to subtitles in available languages with the addition of relevant non-dialogue information.

This allows Hughes to take another old time situation and satirize it and make it real, putting very relate-able humor about family gatherings and such throughout. As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations.The film itself has several soft filters applied to the original shots, but even so, the added detail and clarity from this release vs the previous Blu-ray releases is shocking. track might add some additional allure, but odds are unless you’re clamoring to have this in 4K – keep what you’ve got. However, it’s not a uniform issue, there are plenty of places where skin tones look perfectly natural and healthy. However, throughout all this chaos, the Griswold’s still are able to find the magic of family, even if that magic is found after what seems like the most arduous several weeks of their life. The only lump of coal for this disc is the decided lack of any new bonus features with the same old commentary track recycled and wrapped up in old newspaper for this release.
Black Levels: Blacks improve to very natural levels with plenty of good visibility and discernible patterns, textures and finer details more prominent now.

If you’ve only been watching this on tv for several years, you’ve been missing some extremely funny parts that had to be cut, for censorship and time allotment of commercial insertions. I think, while utilized slightly less this time around, these 2 iterations of Rusty and Audrey are kind of more memorable in a sense of them being funny characters this time instead of “just the Griswold kids”.
Every year, the day after the Thanksgiving is usually when my family would pull the movie out to watch it. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation comes with the standard Blu-ray edition and a redeemable digital code.Considering that 2015 was the film’s 25th anniversary, the lack of extras from even that disc feels particularly egregious, but perhaps none of the central figures were available or wanted to provide interviews.
