Smith says books or songs or films are triggers (oh, that’s a term Richard Hugo uses, in The Triggering Town) for her creative activity, for writing. I guess that’s why I’m a wee bit sad when it comes to the fact that she didn’t incorporate more of herself into this, although I do think I understand what she was going for. While in Paris, Smith takes the occasion to visit the graves or homes of artists she sees as touchstones for her life and work: Albert Camus, Simone Weil, Patrick Modiano.

Originally delivered as a series of lectures at Yale and artfully illustrated for this edition, this, in book form, is as exquisite as anything published in this season.
