About this deal

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. This cookbook truly brings to life the culinary traditions of Downton Abbey and the real-life estates that were its inspiration.

She thinks Victorian food is vastly underrated, though can also see why they needed decent corsetry, but has to admit that the Georgians did it better, if only because of the parmesan ice cream and all that brandy. Annie Gray provides background for each recipe along with the name of the cookbook and year it was taken from. The recipes are there, easy to follow, and adapted to contemporary language, but they serve more so as an example of the piece of history. As someone who has watched the series myself as a fan, I did not expect that to be the case when I went to read this book. This is a delightful Afternoon Tea recipe book in conjunction with the television series Downton Abbey. I wish Downton would do a book on clothes and accessories in the same vein as this book has been produced. Other recipes are simply too complicated and labour intensive especially with today’s more time poor lifestyle (and no servants) and the reality that many of us live in flats where the kitchen would barely cover half in a country house. Even if you did not have the skills to cook some of the more exotic meals you believe they ate in the Downton period, this book clearly lays the ingredients out boldly and clearly, with nowhere near as many items in each recipe that I thought it might include, which makes it so much easier to follow.

As the book is reflecting the divided class of Downton Abbey, and the cookbook likewise is divided (mostly) into two parts. Food historian Annie Gray gives a rich and fascinating insight into the background of the dishes popular between 1912 and 1926—a period of tremendous change and conflict, as well as culinary development. Whether adapted from original recipes of the period, replicated as seen or alluded to on screen, or typical of the time, all the recipes reflect the influences found on the Downton Abbey tables.I wouldn't recommend this to those who have other British tea cookbooks like Tea Fit for a Queen: Recipes Drinks for Afternoon Tea. This book is a must-read for fans of the show, historical cooking enthusiasts and even fans of the Great British Baking Show. But very few pictures of the actual food made with the recipes, which makes the book less appealing as an actual cookbook. This book is being re-released in a gift set with a matching apron this year in 2022 for seasonal gift giving. Downton fans will appreciate this enticing collection of classic British holiday recipes from the Edwardian era, evocative narratives about Christmas traditions, and seasonal anecdotes from the award winning series.

The instructions seem clear, and most ingredients seem accessible, which is what the tough part usually is with these "historical" cookbooks. It takes place at the fictional estate of "Downton Abbey" in the time around WWI and before the events of WWII.She loves the recipes inside of it, they almost feel like vintage home-cooked meals, testament to what you would see people cooking during the Edwardian era.

Anyhow, the Chania water front is lined with family-owned restaurants and like just about everywhere in Greece, there's a maître d' positioned in front of each of those restaurants. Food historian Annie Gray in The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook offers up not only a feast for the eyes and the palette, but a marvelous historical journey through the lives, the country homes, the foods, the kitchens, and the people who populated such places as the fictional Downton Abbey. There are detailed notes are included with each recipe to help the modern cook use the recipes for their own dinners. The Riches of Chaucer: In which His Impurities Have Been Expunged, His Spelling Modernised, His Rhythm Accentuated and His Obsolete Terms Explained; Also Have Been Added a Few Explanatory Notes and a New Memoir of the Poet, Volume 1, E.As with the other books in the series, this one provides a brief history of the tea treat and explains how it would have been made and when and why. The quintessential breakfast associated with the English upper classes, is of course, Kedgeree, a lightly spiced dish of rice, fish, and hard-boiled eggs.
