About this deal

The specialist, whether selling cheese or stuffed animals, still has an important role to play, and in London particularly whole streets of independent businesses continue to prosper. Only 2,000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. This beautiful facsimile edition features all 24 of Ravilious’s colour illustrations, and includes an essay by Gill Saunders, Senior Curator of Prints at the Victoria and Albert Museum, that sets the book in its historical context. How, we might wonder, was Ravilious inspired by the village itself, with its idiosyncratic mix of medieval, early modern and Victorian architecture, and its fanciful plasterwork?

He was born in the shadow of the Sussex Downs in the coastal town of Eastbourne, the surrounding landscape of which heavily influenced many of his best known works. Sir James Richards (1907 - 92) was editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent to The Times for over 20 years. Published by Published by Victoria and Albert Museum (Publishing), South Kensington, London First Edition . Seventy years later, almost to the day, the Mainstone Press published what is effectively a facsimile of Ravilious’s now much-coveted last book, along with two twenty-first century commentaries. Profusely illustrated throughout, mostly in colour, including reproductions of all 24 plates from the original edition of "High Street".A very enjoyable book - beautifully produced and a fascinating snapshot of the high street as it was around the middle part of the Twentieth Century.

His introduction is compelling and refreshingly direct, urging us to look closely but concluding, rightly, that there can be no correct interpretations of Ravilious, whose pictures still quiver with mysterious life.for The story of High Street, after the publisher had observed that the ‘Knife Grinder’ lithograph looked better when printed on the more generously-sized pages of Country Fair (The Country Life Annual, 1938). Only 2,000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz during World War II. Notoriously hard to find in decent condition, as the publisher's pictorial boards are so fragile, and virtually unknown in its glassine complete with flaps. Only 2000 copies printed as the lithographic plates were destroyed during the Blitz (according to Mainstone Press, who published a limited edition facsimile with essays and further illustrations in 2008).

If you need one more excuse to own this book: At the time of publication, only 2000 copies were produced, and sadly the lithographic plates were destroyed during WWII. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. He made detailed annotated sketches on the spot, from which he later drew edited versions with simple, incisive pencil lines, and eventually transferred them to lithographic plates. In this environment there was no reason for a retailer to specialise, hence the diversification noted by Burke, and the accompanying loss of distinctiveness. Sir James Richards (1907-92) was editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent to The Times for over 20 years. Selected items may be purchased early for dispatch from the future date given in their product information. He quickly mastered the technical skills to achieve a wider range of colours in his lithographs than the four ink colours used, by overprinting transparent inks. If you're interested in the history of the British high street, you might enjoy this extract from 'Eric Ravilious: The Story of High Street', which was published in 2008 by The Mainstone Press.
