I also love the challenge of taking beautiful photos that capture the essence of the location I am visiting. By the end of the class, everyone had a basic layout designed for their quilt that they were pleased with, though maybe not all the blocks were cut or put up. Not long ago, I was in Dubai to check out the biannual Dubai International Quilt Show which I was covering for an article in Quiltmania magazine. There is so much to learn and glean each time you pick up a quilting book, especially as a seamstress.

During those years, Kaffe’s design world also expanded to encompass needlepoint patterns, mosaics, fabric designs and quilt patterns. Well worth the money, even if you only look at the book and don't actually make any of the designs - I was inspired! Since 1999, Glorious Color has specialized in the quilt fabric and books created by Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy. In the mid 1980’s when I was deep into knitting, he came out with his landmark knitting design book. The designs and his unrestrained use of color were so unique and different – he wasn’t knitting – he was painting with wool.Adjectives like “delicious”, “voluptuous”, “fresh”, “juicy”, and “passionate” were liberally sprinkled in his vocabulary and rolled off his tongue easily. It's like old fashioned patchwork with modern ideas all put together in a way that makes you think 'I could do that! All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps.

The book is divided into five chapters by colour themes: gentle Soft Pastels, bold and brassy Circus hues, fresh Leafy Gardens, alluring Antique Stone Colours and rich Renaissance tones. The book inspires me to make similar quilts, but also provides inspiration for use of that fabric stash that has accumulated, waiting to be turned into a treasure.

This is a patchwork book that pushes colour boundaries and there are some really great ideas with colours together that you just wouldn't think would look right. The success of his work is in how he uses simple forms such as stripes and puts them together in exciting ways.

Just as he did in his previous, wonderful design books on Needlepoint, Knitting and Home Decor, Kaffe Fassett has brought his exuberant sense of color and pattern to the design of quilts. I first borrowed this book from the library nearly 10 years ago, then purchased it 5 years ago, and I am still browsing through it. If we did not bring the right colors with us, there were plenty of fabric choices available from the show organizers, including a huge selection of Kaffe’s fabrics. Besides this quilting class, I have also taken and written about a quilt class with Empty Spools as well as the Judy Niemeyer Quiltworx class that I took at her retreat house in Montana. He has published many books, including over 20 beautifully photographed quilt pattern volumes which make it easy to produce one of his trademark designs. Not only is Kaffe exuberant in his tactile use of color he is also extremely passionate and erudite when he talks about color in his creative world. I am a retired PhD chemist and traveling the world is one of my deepest passions which continues to add to my ever growing quilt of life experiences.
